The High Renaissance was the culmination of the artistic revolution of the Early Renaissance, and one of the great explosions of creative genius in history.(1). During the Renaissance there were many drastic changes in the style of art. Giotto was a very influential painter, during the start of the Renaissance. In Giotto's work he used three dimensional images; this was a drastic change from the classic art where depth was not used. His paintings were very realistic and life like, unlike the previous centuries art. Giotto's work inspired artists by the likes of Leonardo de Vinci, and Michelangelo.
Leonardo Da Vinci came to Rome in 1513, he was sixty-one.(2) Leonardo was a skilled artist, that painted many wonderful pictures that are known today.(3) Some of his most famous pictures that he painted is the, “Last Supper”, and the “Mona Lisa”. The “Mona Lisa” was a painting that Leonardo Da Vinci had painted, when he took time off to paint, when he was painting another picture called “The Battle of Anghiari”, which was completely destroyed. What had happened was Leonardo Da Vinci was offered a piece of Marble to carve a statue out of it, he declined. Another young sculptor by the name of Michelangelo Buonarroti had accepted the job. After working for awhile, Michelangelo was done with his masterpiece. When it was done the City Councilors invited all of the Florentine artists to view the new work. Among one of them was Leonardo. When a person thinks about the Renaissance, the first thing that comes to mind is more than likely knights in shining armor fighting off dragons and saving the princess. However, lets look at a more realistic approach towards the Renaissance and talk about what really brings out the brilliance and the beauty of this time period, which is nonetheless the art that was informed and inspired by classical antiquity from the Greeks and the Roman civilizations. The artist during the Renaissance was pure genius and masters of draftsmanship and distinguished techniques in displaying a command of lighting, flawless perspectives of image, accurate portrayals of flora and fauna, and the complexities and intricacies of human anatomy and physiology. This period was heavily influenced by religious relic and concepts and these artists expanded beyond the ideas of religious intuitive. Renaissance art was a movement of rediscovering people as individuals as a person and not just another being and this proven through the faces on paintings that have profound and very distinctive displays and expression of emotion. Artwork during the Renaissance became the it thing to do spreading into the households of wealthy merchants, bankers, popes, and princes spending large amounts of money on portraits, miniatures, and still life photographs.

In Florence, Italy, the famous, Leonardo da Vinci started painting The Mona Lisa one of the most well known paintings in the entire world, in 1503 and finally completed it in 1517. One of the biggest reasons for the popularity of the painting is the artist himself. Leonardo is one of the most recognized artists of all time. The Mona Lisa was painted after Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of a wealthy merchant Francesco del Giocondo from Tuscany. The painting was created to be a celebration of their home's completion as well as the arrival of their second son. The Mona Lisa is one of the most well know paintings from the time of the Renaissance. This painting as well as Leonardo da Vinci, inspired and affected many of the artists and writers in the Renaissance. It also changed the way people saw and made art. During the Renaissance art was usually just what they saw. They drew people the way they were, with no real sense of freedom to be creative. The Mona Lisa's background was mainly different because of its landscape. The Mona Lisa was one of the first paintings if not the first to have an imaginary background. This means that the background was so unique, because no other artists had decided to create a piece with an Aerial view, creativity, and freedom. It opened up new possibilities for other artists to step of out their comfort zone and not only make what was expected of them.
During the Renaissance artists changed the way they painted and sculpted, they learned how to paint in all three dimensions, which brought life and realism to their works. Also, getting away from the religious roots of art created an entirely new type of art that was rich in drama and emotion. This was also the time period when painting with oils was started.
The Renaissance was a time of rebirth, as its name entails. In Italy, more people were becoming literate and more books were being printed. More scientific discoveries were being made and therefore more theories were being published. In this time of intellectual prosperity, art also made a great leap. Perspective was the main change during this time period, and throughout the years, starting around 1400, it became more involved and more intricate. Eventually artists were so adept at using it, that it became the primary way to insert intimacy and feelings of emotion into a painting. This evolution of technique paved the way for later artists to play with new approaches to allow the viewer to experience an image in different ways.
The Renaissance art had well defined landscapes, natural folds in drapery and three dimensional objects or people. The middle ages art was focused on religion and symbolic representations (Doc.A). At the same time the new artistic styles almost kind of mocked the the movements and interest of the new age. That is how the renaissance changed has man’s view of man on art.(doc.A)

Leonardo Da Vinci is a famed artist today due to his renowned painting of the ‘Mona Lisa’. In the 14th century, people of Venice would have known him as an engineer, people of Milan would have known him for his Last Supper, but only the people of Florence would have seen his whole character. Da Vinci is known as the archetypal Renaissance man, a man of “unquenchable curiosity” and “feverishly inventive imagination”. Da Vinci created many technologies and new innovations which were so advanced for his time and age that many scholars did not believe him. He contributed to civilisation through three main areas: art, science and engineering.
Before the Renaissance, art was all about religion, and lacked emotions and details. Renaissance Art had stronger emotions, well defined landscapes, and utilized 3D figures. The Renaissance is also when artists started making names for themselves, and began being recognized for their works. During the Renaissance time people learned how to make more complex things such as art and this in the future will change the way people will see art. The Italian Renaissance included some of the greatest artists we have ever seen from Leonard Da Vinci, to Michelangelo, and Raphael. The Renaissance took place from the late thirteenth to sixteenth centuries and is know as the ‘rebirth’. The idea that the rebirth of the arts after being asleep for a thousand years is an amazing thing to grasp. This time brought back light to liberal arts, which were on the brink of being extinct. (Murray 2) What is also interesting about art during this time was that most of the art had Christian in its roots, for example, Botticelli’s The Allegory of Spring (Faure 1) is said to have had a Christian interpretation. (Murray) “Every Italian artist, willingly took the title of architect, sculptor, and painter” (Faure 2). At the beginning of the fifteenth century, the Italian painters had asked the Flemish painters for their secret techniques because the Italians felt like the language of painting was one that was always meant for them. (Faure 4) The sculptors claimed their inspiration from ancient works. Lastly the Renaissance introduced idea of individualism, which helped the Italians get away from everything that was going on during that time. Art during the Renaissance included painting, sculpting and architecture, all of which were an important part in expressing the idea of individualism and making art what is is today.
Paintings are unrealistic and disproportionate. Religious figures are the focus of many works. The Renaissance changed the old social context of art by introducing humanism, new themes and techniques. The Renaissance was a time when people began to think and see things differently. It was a time for new innovations.
Leonardo is one of the few people who has the ability to make these qualities seem so perfect under his hands. His artworks are by far the most popular pieces of art that are in museums to this day. Recently a popular painting “Salvator Mundi”, painted between 1490-1500, has been placed up for auction and is estimated that the painting will sale for at least $100 million. This is just one of 16 surviving paintings that have made it through the years and it’s not even the most popular one. The Mona Lisa is the most popular painting by anyone to this very day. It was painted in the year 1503 and is famous for multiple reasons. One being that da Vinci didn’t just paint this ordinarily, but in a technique called sfumato and it was painted in atmospheric perspective as seen in the background. The technique sfumato is the blending of oil paints to blur the lines between colors. Atmospheric perspective was a new painting style where things far away in paintings looked blurry and this style was used in the background of the Mona Lisa. The word mysterious is associated with this painting and others that have come from his works. The smile that is presented in the Mona Lisa is somewhat puzzling in its own way and the person depicted in the painting is still not 100% known to experts to this day.
