Carl Forman’s High Noon is on the American film Institute list of 100 good is America movies of all time. On the list, High Noon is number 27, beating The Sound of Music. A classic short story called The Most Dangerous Game was written by Richard Connell. Although it was first published in 1924, it is still read by people today. Even though the setting, conditions, and conflicts of High Noon and The Most Dangerous Game, they are actually very similar. In High Noon the protagonist whose name is Will Kane, is a police officer. “‘ I sent a man up five years ago for murder. He was supposed to hang, but up north they commuted to life. Now he’s free-I don’t know how. Anyway it looks like he’s coming back’” (Foreman 295). This is ironic because usually police officers catch criminals, but now it’s vice versa; Frank Miller now wants to kill will. Will Kane said “‘ I’m not trying to be a hero! If you think I like doing this, you’re crazy’” (Foreman 296). This shows one man versus self conflict portrayed in High Noon. There was also man versus self conflict shown in Cornell’s story. “Rainsford knew he could do one of two things. He could stay where he was and wait. That was suicide. He could flee. That was postponing the inevitable’” (Connell 230). As they both faced mental choices, also faced physical conflicts. Rainsford injured general Zaroff by making a Malay-man catcher. “ He [General Zaroff] stood there rubbing his injured shoulder” (Connell 299). At the end of the High Noon movie, Will Kane shot Ben, which is a man versus man conflict. “His [Ben’s] shot misses Kane, but Kane does not miss him. Ben whirls and goes down” (Foreman 328).
