In the mid 1900’s college students were able to pay for their tuition with money they made from their summer jobs (Paul F. Campos). It’s beyond belief that “over the past 35 year’s college tuition as public universities has nearly quadrupled” (Paul F. Campos). This is also becoming a problem to families who now cannot afford to send their children to college. The question that many people across America want to know is why is public college so expensive? College is overly priced because of the need for money for lost state funding, and the many amenities colleges build to attract students to their campus. Colleges are competing with each other to have the most students attend their school to pay off lost state funding, and to have bragging rights on how lavish their campus is. For example, High Point University “boasts a first-run movie theater with complimentary popcorn, drinks and snacks, dorms with plasma screen televisions, a complimentary shuttle service around campus, outdoor hot tubs and a steakhouse” (Jonathan Swartz). This tactic seem to work because High Point University has one of the highest enrollment rates. It is absurd that millions of dollars are being used to build unnecessary things when it could be used to advance education, and lower tuition. “Even in the face of growing student debt levels, universities typically defend their spending as a means to stay competitive with other colleges” (Jonathan Swartz). It is shown that colleges know that they are putting students in debt with the unnecessary additions to their campuses, and continue to not make changes to stop this trend.
