Hidden Enemies What is an antagonist? In the story The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Jim is the antagonist because Jim manipulates Huck, without Jim the journey would have been a lot easier, and Jim makes Huck feel like Huck is a bad person. First Jim manipulates Huck. “ ‘Well, dey,s reasons. But you wouldn’ tell on me ef I’uz to tell you would you, Huck?’ ‘Blamed if I would, Jim.’ ‘Well, I b’lieve you, Huck. I-I run-off.’ ‘Jim!’ “(pg.43). This shows That Jim manipulates Huck because Jim makes Huck promise that he won’t tell before telling him. This makes Huck obligated to keep Jim’s secret when he wouldn’t normally. “Pooty soon I’ll be a-shout’n for joy, en I’ll say, it’s all on accounts o’Huck; I’s a free man, en I couldn’t ever ben free ef it hadn’t ben for Huck; Huck done it. “He told me what it was, and I see in a minute it was worth fifteen of mine for style, and would make Jim just as free a man as mine would, and maybe get us all killed besides.” (pg. 232-233). This quote shows that the journey would have been a lot easier without him because Huck is risking his life to save Jim. Finally Jim makes Huck feel like Huck is a bad person. “ ‘Well, I did.I said I wouldn’t, and I’ll stick to it. Honest injun, I will. People would call me a low-down Abolitionist and despise me for keeping mum’ “ (pg.43) Jim makes Huck promise not to tell about him being a runaway slave which makes him not a good guy in the eyes of the rest of the world and in Huck’s own eyes. “ ‘All right then, I’ll go to hell’-and tore it up” (pg. 214) After deciding to save Jim he thinks that he is such a bad person that he will go to hell.
