How do you erase a memory? You can’t!!! While trying to forget the details of the hidden crime, yes in some eyes abortion is a crime, they can never be erased. “Abortions will not let you forget” (1). The poem “The Mother” by Gwendolyn Brooks, strikes the reader with a gamut of emotions! While the physical child is not present, the spirit of that child yet lives on! “I have heard in the voices of the wind the voices of my dim killed children” (11). How can a mother heal after aborting her child? The physical child was erased, mourned and ironically eternally imprinted in the mother’s mind, resulting in the Ghost Child! Whether the intentions were good or not, the thought of erasing a living creature from this earth is not easy. The question arises: How do you live each day and move forward? The Ghost Child is harder to put out of the mother’s mind because she’s filled with visions of what will never be! “The singers and workers that never handled the air” (4), because the child was not born, the mother doesn’t know if the ghost child would’ve been a singer, movie star or a CEO of a corporation! Rejection. Desperate to help your dying child, you go to the one place you can get help and the doctor says no. All because your life savings just isn't enough. In The Pearl by John Steinbeck, the doctor is guilty of malpractice for breaking the Hippocratic oath: not treating Coyotito because he doesn't want to work for little payment. Coyotito is stung by a scorpion and Kino goes to the doctor to get him treated. Kino asks if the doctor will treat Coyotito, and the guard goes to talk to the doctor. The doctor says that he will not treat the baby unless there is payment. Kino gives the guard pearls, and the doctor rejects them. The guard tells Kino that the doctor has a more important patient, lying to avoid work.
Hence, the poem's tone contains elements of remorse as well as impassivity. The traveler's detached description of the mother, "...a doe, a recent killing; / she had stiffened already, almost cold" (6-7), and the wistful detail with which he depicts her unborn offspring, "...her fawn lay there waiting...
Upon hearing the term, “The Victorian Woman,” it is likely that one’s mind conjures up an image of a good and virtuous woman whose life revolved around the domestic sphere of the home and family, and who demonstrated a complete devotion to impeccable etiquette as well as to a strong moral system. It is certainly true that during Victorian England the ideal female was invested in her role as a wife and a mother, and demonstrated moral stability and asexuality with an influence that acted as her family’s shield to the intrusions of industrial life. Yet despite the prevalence of such upstanding women in society, needless to say not all women lived up to such a high level of moral aptitude. Thus, we must beg the question, what became of the women who fell far short from such a standard? What became of the women who fell from this pedestal of the ideal Victorian woman, and by way of drunkenness, criminality, or misconduct became the negation of this Victorian ideal of femininity?
Gwendolyn Brooks' poem "The mother" tells us about a mother who had many abortions. The speaker is addressing her children in explain to them why child could not have them. The internal conflict reveals that she regret killing her children or "small pups with a little or with no hair." The speaker tells what she will never do with her children that she killed. She will "never neglect", "beat", "silence", "buy with sweet", " scuffle off ghosts that come", "controlling your luscious sigh/ return for a snack", never hear them "giggled", "planned", and "cried." She also wishes she could see their "marriage", "aches", "stilted", play "games", and "deaths." She regrets even not giving them a "name" and "breaths." The mother knows that her decision will not let her forget by using the phrase "Abortions will not let you forget." The external conflict lets us know that she did not acted alone in her decision making. She mentions "believe that even in my deliberateness I was not deliberate" and "whine that the crime was other than mine." The speaker is saying that her decision to have an abortion was not final yet but someone forced her into having it anyway. The external conflict is that she cannot forget the pain on the day of having the abortions. She mentions the "contracted" and "eased" that she felt having abortions.
During the first 20 paragraphs, Williams is simply recalling the events as they had taken place. Never revealing the death of the child. We are led to believe that the child never dies, but Williams gives us clues into her death when he states in paragraph 31, "I have seen at least two children lying dead in bed of neglect." His guilt of how he handled the situation plunges his imagination down a dark, immoral path. The pivotal point between reality and his vivid imagination becomes clear when he states, "I explained the danger but said that I would not insist on the throat examination so long as they (her parents) would take the responsibility." This is where his imagination takes over. Instantly, his adoration and love for the young girl turns to utter loathing. He goes on to describe her as a "savage brat."

Talking about abortion brings out an emotional response in many women. This is because having an abortion takes a massive emotional toll on some women. As Nanyjo Mann said, three weeks after having an abortion, “I became preoccupied with the thoughts of death. I fantasized about how I would die. My baby struggled for two hours” (Reardon, 1987, p. xviii). In the forward of the book “Aborted Women, Silent No More” Nanyjo, a women telling her story of abortion, goes on to tell about feeling unstable with herself after having an abortion. She wanted to prove to herself that destroying others didn’t hurt, but it does (Reardon, 1987, p. xix-xx). Continuing in reading Nanyjo’s story, she tells all of the effects and feelings she went through after having an abortion including stress, depression and low self esteem. Any girl under the age of 18 would have an even harder time dealing with this type of stress. Teenagers are already seeking their identity and worry about their grades, looks, and peer acceptance. Going through the post abortion stress all by themselves would be overwhelming and potentially put them at risk for mental breakdown.

Sabrina and Daphne had to get over what happened to them in the different homes and open their eyes to a new adventure with a grandma they never knew about. The book sets up the reader with a theme that no matter how difficult life gets do not give up, the setting gives the reader a mental image of what Ferryport Landing was like and the types of characters makes the literary work have great quality.
In The Murder of Helen Jewett, Patricia Cohen uses one of the most trivial murders during the 1800’s to illustrate the sexiest society accommodations to the privileged, hypocritical tunneled views toward sexual behavior, and the exploitation of legal codes, use of tabloid journalism, and politics. Taking the fact that woman was made from taking a rib from man was more than biblical knowledge, but incorporated into the male belief that a woman’s place is determined by the man. Helen had the proper rearing a maid servant, but how did she fall so far from grace. Judge Weston properly takes credit for rearing her with the proper strictness and education. Was Helen seduced at an early age and introduced to sexual perversions that were more persuasive that the bible belt life that the Weston’s tried to live? Was Helen simply a woman who knew how to use what she had to get what she wanted? Through personal correspondence, legal documentation, census reports, paintings, and newspapers we are able to make our own determinations. Cohen provides more than enough background and history to allow any one to make their own opinion how the murder of a woman could be turned into a side show at a circus.
It is expected that at a young age, children are taught the difference between what is right and what is wrong in all types of situations. The majority of Supreme Court Justices abolished mandatory life in prison for juveniles that commit heinous crimes, argued this with the consideration of age immaturity, impetuosity, and also negative family and home environments. These violent crimes can be defined as murder, rape, armed robbery, aggravated assault and the like depending on state law. With these monstrous acts in mind the supreme court justices argument could be proven otherwise through capability and accountability, the underdevelopment of the teenage brain and the severity of the crime. She knows her son would not want her to be in this pain and dwell on something she cannot change which is why the author states “But soon afterwards, when the child had been buried, it appeared by night in the places where it had sat and played during its life, and if the mother wept, it wept also, and, when morning came, it disappeared.” The little boy is referred to as ‘it’ because he is only appearing in the mother’s mind as she reminisces all of the memories they shared. The mother eventually comes to an understanding with this terrible incident and at peace for herself and her little boy when the story reads “Then the mother gave her sorrow into God’s keeping, and bore it quietly and patiently, and the child came no more, but slept in its little bed beneath the earth.” She finally let go. Also, in the last quotation, this is showing that the mother now worships God above all and is putting her faith in him. But her use of pathos and description shows that even she can’t handle the dark moments that experience with young pregnant women. She describes the process of abortion, the way she feels as well as the pregnant victims. Tisdale wants people to be educated in this area, so less abortion have to be performed. As she narrates her stories of teenagers receiving abortions, she believes that in some circumstances abortion is necessary, but it can also be a cruel, and tragic thing to be a part of, and could easily be avoided if people were more educated in the matter. “Soon I am talking to an eighteen-year-old women pregnant for the fourth time” (Tisdale 650). Tisdale’s use of pathos does not help her in this case. As she describes in detail what goes on during abortion, readers come to realizes how terrible and dark it really is. Tisdale describes the emotion pregnant women feel as they are having their child ripped away from them.

A crime is an act that breaks a law that relates to how to behave in society. The harm caused by the act is seen to be against society as a whole, not just a specific person. More specifically, a crime is an act (something you do) or omission (something you don’t do) that is against the law and punishable upon conviction. Crime includes criminal code offences against a person or property, drug offences, and so much more. Why do people commit crimes? Why do women commit crimes? Is a woman capable of committing a crime, and what causes her to do so? Many people believe that women would never commit crimes because of the common stereotypes of them being trustworthy, nurturing, and compassionate people. They place these stereotypes on women because they believe that women are not capable of committing crimes to the point where they would have to face prison. Although these stereotypes are assured to be true, these people do not realize that women crime rates have been increasing tremendously overtime, especially in the 1980's. Women/female offenders have had the fastest growing segment over the last 40 years, but are still much smaller than men. It has been proven that out of 1.5 million prisoners incarcerated in the nation, only 54 out of 100,000 of those people are women. According to Judge Thomas Mostowy, 14% of women crimes are violent, 10% are murders, 60% are against family members, and 20% of the violent female offenders are juveniles who have committed other crimes but notably majority of them are non-violent.
