In the novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne is depicting the story of of Hester Prynne’s adultery scandal. By opposing Puritan values, Hester is forced to complete several tasks as punishment, one of which being to wear a bright, red Scarlet letter “A”. While the meaning of the scarlet letter changes, it also changes Hester's life as well. The Scarlet letter changes Hester's life in several ways, such as causing her to be isolated from the community, mistreatment by Pearl, and how she is finally viewed by the community.

The Scarlet Letter causes Hester to be isolated from the community. Hester is isolated physically since she lives on the edge of town, socially since she is considered an outcast, and morally since she committed adultery.
