People in the pursuit of education experience this greatly because they are striving to pass their classes to succeed academically. Anthony writes, “No doubt some of the experience I have in my relationships are part of what is good about them, part of what makes the relationship contribute to my flourishing, to what is good in my life” (Kwame Anthony Appiah 450). The experience, he feels during a relationship is what makes him happy in life not the relationship itself. The problem we have in today’s society is that people work to acquire as much money and possessions as they can and they think this will achieve happiness. It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
For example enjoyment of learning motivates one to continue wanting to learn as for boredom it only decreases motivation. When one is motivated to do something the closer they are to accomplishing the happier they end up being. Bryan Cohen , author of The Post-College Guide to Happiness, says “ educational attainment can lead to some serious happiness”(3). It was during the year 1026 that Mahmud of Ghazni raided the Somanatha temple for its wealth, leading to the destruction of its many idols. In Somanatha: The Many Voices of a History, Romila Thapar explores the distinct narratives that were written at the time by placing them into the historical context of the period. Her goal, through this monograph, was not to reestablish how we perceive the history of the raid, but to instead study the diverse perspectives and views represented in the various sources collected on the topic. Historical interpretations range from the Turko-Persian narratives of the period to the Colonial writings long after the raid. Through the investigation of the sources one would hope to point out the variations in the texts, and then analyze why these deviations in the story came to be. Thapar’s findings would assist any historian in determining the nature of these sources and the way they are currently used. One must remember that any and all sources could be of significant importance when looking at the attitudes of the individuals of the time.
The conversations heard in an early morning restaurant that is open for twenty-fours a day, the strangest conversations could be heard. A young musicians who played in the same club the previous night’s starts a conversation her friend about not having a television set at home and follows up by the fact that because there is no television set, than her kids do not play video games. In this crowd, the lack of a television is not surprising in a household. The friend, obviously awake from the previous night, responds, “Yeah, I didn’t have a TV set or video games, but instead of teaching my kid that these things were not important or needed, I instead taught him to work around what I wanted and go to his friend’s house to watch TV and play video games”. The idea that motivation is extrinsic is what many parents would expect and desire of their children. In addition, while that may indeed be the case, the extrinsic motivation may not be the source they desire.
