The Makings of a Hero
A hero is a genuine person who cares for the well-being and prosperity of others without seeking any attention for fame or redemption. Heroes are not always wearing capes with super powers. They can be, and usually are, real people. A hero often sacrifices something of their own in order for someone else to succeed or be happy. Heroes are protagonists in story and often work against the antagonist or a force opposing the main character. Heroes possess qualities like bravery, selflessness, and a care for others. In The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton there are many characters with qualities of a hero. Dally, who gives his life to care for his younger brothers after their parents passed away, and Cherry, who is brave enough to spy on her gang show these qualities. However the most heroic character in The Outsiders is Johnny “Johnnycake” Cade because he is brave, caring, and selfless. A quality that is most admirable in Johnny Cade is how he cares for others and will do anything to help them. He cares for all the greasers and has the strength to help them. When the Socs had gang up on Ponyboy, Johnny kills Bob who was drowning Ponyboy. “Yeah.’ His voice quavered slightly, ‘I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you. Bravery is standing up for others with courageous behavior. Johnny shows bravery throughout the story in many ways such as defending the Soc girls, Cherry and Marcia. “Leave her alone, Dally. ‘Huh?’ Dally was taken off guard. He stared at Johnny in disbelief… Johnny gulped and got a little pale, but he said, ‘You heard me. Leave her alone” (Hinton 24). Dally flirts with Cherry and Marcia so Johnny calls out Dally to stop since he knows they do not appreciate it. Ponyboy and Dally are surprised because they have never seen Johnny act in such a brave and heroic manner
