Before diving into the specific questions being asked in this case, I believe it is important to provide a solid foundation of knowledge about Herman Miller, Inc. to gain a better understanding of how the company started, what made it successful, and where it is today. Herman Miller started its operations back in 1905 under the name Star Furniture Company, a manufacturer of traditional-style bedroom suites located in Zeeland, Michigan. In 1909, the company changed its name to Michigan Star Furniture Company and hired Dirk Jan De Pree as a clerk. De Pree later became president and eventually convinced his father-in-law, Herman Miller, to purchase the majority of shares. De Pree began looking for a way to save the company. He hired designer Gilbert Rhode, who’s philosophy was that “People are important, not furniture. Furniture should be useful.” De Pree saw potential in this philosophy, so he reflected this way of thinking into designing and selling furniture that reflected a way of life. After Rhode’s death, De Pree hired George Nelson as Herman Miller’s first design director, and Charles and Ray Eames, a husband-and-wife design team from Los Angeles. During the 1950’s Herman Miller introduced a number of new furniture designs, including some by Alexander Girard, Charles and Ray Eames, and George Nelson.
