While Hercules was the hero of all America, the people of Virginia had their own great hero. That hero was Theseus, the son of the Virginian Governor Aegeus. Theseus was sent to live with his mother in a small town in Kentucky when he was still a baby as Aegeus did not want Theseus to grow up in the spotlight. As Theseus grew up, he became the strongest young man around and spent many days exploring the wilderness around him.
When he turned 18, his mother gave him a test that had been given to her by Aegeus. The test was both mental and physical. Theseus easily passed it and received his father’s shoes, necktie, and pen, along with a note explaining that Theseus was his son.     All throughout Edith Hamilton’s rendition of Theseus’ story she displays example for all three parts of the characteristic from Theseus’ superior strength, the prime example from the story is when Theseus kills the sleeping Minotaur without any weapons and only his bare hands, an example of Theseus’ intelligence comes during his reign as the King of Athens, he’s described as a wise king who chose a more democratic rule to govern his people, and an example for Theseus’ courage lies in his selfless actions to volunteer himself as one of the sacrifices to enter the Labyrinth to face the Minotaur. Although Hamilton’s description of Theseus’ legacy speaks for itself, “Theseus was, of course, bravest of the brave as all heroes are, but unlike other heroes he was as compassionate as he was brave and a man of great intellect as well as bodily strength (Hamilton 166.)” Just in Hamilton’s quick summary of Theseus’ character is a testament that he doesn’t fit the role of an epic hero but he is the literal archetype which epic heroes strive to be. Scholars today debate the usage of the word “hero” to describe Odysseus. However, I think that this is a highly ambiguous question. The question cannot simply be whether or not Odysseus is a hero, because the definition of a hero is dependent on one’s perspective. While it may be clear to some that Odysseus is a hero, by other’s standards he is quite the opposite. As written in On Heroes, ancient Greeks considered heroes as “humans, male or female, of the remote past, endowed with superhuman abilities and descended from the immortal gods themselves.” By this definition, whether or not one is a hero is not based on one’s humanitarian qualities or moral traits but on one’s strength, ability, and prestige. Today, heroes range from superheroes on television, to civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., to firefighters, even to a neighbor helping another find a lost pet. Heroism is not necessarily associated with brute strength, or even recognition, but with noble deeds to help others. In addition, heroes must follow strict moral codes. One who performs great actions, but has no moral compass is not considered a hero in present day. With these definitions in mind, we can begin to analyze Odysseus’ heroism and find that he straddles the line between heroic and unheroic.
