All throughout history certain advancements have propelled the human evolution to great heights; such as fire, the wheel, and the light bulb. Some advancements have changed how we live our lives for the better and some for the worse. However, we still continue to evolve ourselves with our new found knowledge and advancements to better our lives. We incorporate such advancements to accommodate our daily lives and in some cases, our lives revolve around it. One of the advancements that has had a major impact on our lives and society are automobiles. Since its creation we have revolved our lives around it. Thanks to Henry Ford, who revolutionized the automotive industries with his system of mass production when he created the Model-T. But even Mr. Ford had competition when he created his car against various other steam engines and electric cars at the time. “Henry Ford overcame the challenges posed by gasoline-powered cars” (Berman). However, it was Ford’s vision that paved the way for car companies when his Model-T hit great success in America. But Ford’s time in the limelight didn’t last long and by 1920 the sales for the Model-T started to decline due to other competitors beginning to enter the mass production game. It wasn’t the car itself that Ford revolutionized, but how the cars was made that etched him him into history. “More vehicles today run with petrol powered engines than any other form of energy. By 2015 traditional gas-powered autos will start to decline with electric automobiles and hybrids taking up most of the slack” (Frey). It’s natural to ato assume that hybrid vehicles may be the ideal replacement for the cars of today since they use the same fuel and reload said fuel in the same manner. But this simply constitutes as a band aid fix for the problem at hand. That we are still running very low on fossil fuel. So the idea that hybrids can solve it, is simply wrong. Now electric car might be a viable option since it does not use any sort of fuel at all, but alas, it too has it’s drawbacks. Vehicles were made to make our lives more efficient, and every technological advancements that has been made in regards to vehicles has always been made in pursuit of making life better for who ever drives it. But when said vehicle takes a noticeable amount of time to recharge its power before it is able to be driven again, then we would have taken a step backwards in progress. We cannot compromise such a significant feature as taking the difference from refueling in a matter of minutes, to recharging a vehicle which may take half an hour or more lightly.
