Who was Doc Holliday? Was he just an old western figure who went down in history to be remembered as a famous gunman and gambler who was apart of the legendary shootout at the O.K. Corral, or was he more? Doc Holliday’s father, Henry B. Holliday was a pharmacist who served in several wars. One of the wars his father served in was the Mexican War, where he found an orphan boy named Francisco Hidalgo and decided to make him apart of his family. On January 8, 1849, Henry B. It is believed that he could have contracted the disease from his mother. Doc’s adopted brother also had contracted Tuberculosis that he too, could have contracted from their mother. Unfortunately Doc’s brother did not get to live much longer and died as the disease worsened. After watching his mother and brother die before his eyes to the same disease that is now starting to take over his body as well, Doc Holliday started talking to a number of physicians to find a cure. If TB it’s left untreated it will eat rapidly through many tissues, usually beginning with the lungs, lymph nodes, and kidneys. As the infection spreads to the lungs, it causes a cough and fluid between the chest wall and lungs, which leads to chest pains, severe shortness of breath, and potential heart failure. TB also infects bones and joints that can produce arthritis like pain and characteristic bone damage. Another possibility is that it may affect the fluid around the brain, causing meningitis, which can lead to fever, drowsiness, and eventually coma and death (Wingerson, 2009).
