Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall in the popular television series Dexter, is an extremely complex and interesting man. Dexter works for the Miami police department as a blood spatter expert, helping and assisting in the solving of multiple murder cases; ironically enough he is secretly a murderer. His lifestyle and personality is full of deep secrets and deep seeded emotional problems. Throughout the series of Dexter the audience has access to the dark truth about Dexter Morgan: that he enjoys killing “bad” people. He chooses and kills his victims according to “Harry’s Code:” that Dexter can harm no innocent person. Harry is Dexter’s adoptive father who enabled and taught Dexter how to effectively and operatively kill. In the following paragraphs I will compare Heinz Kohut’s personality theory to Dexter Morgan. According to Scott Barnett, the writer of “TV Character Analysis: Dexter Morgan,” Dexter was traumatized at the age of 3 by seeing his mother killed with a chainsaw inside of a shipping container. Left there to die, he was alone in a pool of his mother’s blood for 3 days before Officer Harry Morgan showed up as the first cop on the scene. . . Dexter started showing signs of being a murderer, killing small animals, dogs, etc. Harry saw this in him very early and soon began showing Dexter a way to control it and use it for good. Harry told him, "There are people out there that do really bad things... and the police can't catch them all." From there on Dexter was taught by Harry to cover his tracks, to look at every detail, to spot these kind of "bad" people and to never get caught. At one point in his life Dexter moves west to become the business mogul he wanted to be. He owned a chain of laundries and was most successful at it. After earning all the money that he wanted he decided to sell the chain and move back east where home was. He went back and found something that had evaded him for all of his life. Love.

The similarities between Jay and Dexter are quite apparent when reading each story. They both come from the Midwest and although Dexter’s family has some money, both are similar in the fact that they did not start out as wealthy, upper class men from rich families. Their hard work and determination to make their own wealth and acquire the luxuries and social status that come with it are completely by their own doing. Both men achieve their goals of the American dream at a relatively young age and are able to be a part of the high society they once observed from a distance. Their desire to amass wealth and the perks associated with it come with an ulterior motive, to win back the girls they desire that will only be with them if they have the wealth and status to bring to the table.
Herman Mudgett, better known as Dr. H.H. Holmes, was born May 16th, 1861, and died May 7th, 1896. He was an American serial killer who trapped, tortured, and murdered possibly hundreds of people. It is believed that his early life is what influenced his love for death and killing. According to Jerrod Brown, Eric Hickey, and Blake Harris, “the childhood of Holmes was shaped by physical abuse, difficulties in socializing with peers, and cruelty towards animals” (Brown, Hickey, and Harris). Holmes obsession with inflicting pain on others would eventually lead him to becoming America’s first documented serial killer. The case of whether serial killers are born with the lust to kill or if they are truly victims of their environment has been a hot debated question by both psychologists and the FBI today. A serial killer is traditionally defined as one that kills 3 or more people at different times with “cooling off” periods in between kills. Both psychological abuse as a child and psychological disorders are to blame for the making of a killer. The nature vs. nurture debate is best applied to the mysterious behaviors and cases of serial killers and their upbringing and environment. Nature is the genetic and biological connections a person has, personality traits, and how genetic make-up all relates to a killer. Nurture is examining the upbringing and environment that a person is around that affects what a person becomes. In some cases however, the effects of only upbringing or only biological problems were the reasons certain serial killers committed crimes. Although there is no definitive answer to what plays the bigger role: nature or nurture, they both are contributing factors that make a serial killer. These deviants of society are afflicted with problems in either their upbringing or have psychological disorders, and are able to blend into our everyday lives with no apparent differences, yet they wreck havoc through their unremorseful killings.
A majority of these individuals are linked through commonalities of their childhood as well as their personality traits and behaviors. The serial murderer’s personality is an intricate recipe of biological, environmental and social circumstances. Though early abuse can cause feelings of aggression and delinquency, childhood experiences alone cannot be to blame. Many people are abused early on as children, and never become killers. Similarly, biological issues, such as brain abnormalities, as we as certain personality disorders would not individually create a murderer. Rather, a distinctive combination of psychological issues, impairments in the brain, and personality disorders help mold a brutal serial killer. Killers cannot be simply born into this world, but under the right circumstances, they will be created.

The FBI states that a serial killer is any one who kills three or more people with an premeditated murder (Morton). It is nearly impossible to find two serial killers with similar characteristics since all of them have distinct methods in ending the lives of their victims. Even though each serial killer differs in many ways, they all crave for power, control and dominance because of their need to kill and punish is much greater than any rule or law. They do not kill for money, but for the trill and excitement they get and to feel superior from everyone else.

Though many humans must deal with violent situations and experience horrific events everyday for most of us it does not alter our attitudes and personalities to be mass murderers. All in all, it is true that many children who are victims of abuse become violent in their adult lives but to cross into the category of a serial killer one must be born with a different biochemical makeup.
Through a young man’s eye we see how he views life and what is important to him and his reactions to the important life obstacles. Dexter is the main character we meet him young, he works at a golf course that he caddies for. We also meet someone important to the story as well who is young named Judy Jones. Judy is the girl of Dexter’s dreams and will be awhile down the story. Dexter has three desires that he thinks about through the whole book and they are love, happiness and, wealth. Dexter is put through these obstacles throughout the whole book and it has shaped his choices and feelings.

A few times each year, our ears perk up when the news is turned on. On occasions there will be news about a murder of a young child or all the way to an old being. Murder is seen as a disgusting happening. Murder is seen as a disgusting hobby. Murder is pure disgust. Eyes fill with hatred when the picture of the serial killer is viewed. They are not human beings, they lack emotion and their eyes are filled with the desire to kill. With quick judgment, people don’t see what’s in the inside. All they see is an emotionless, cold blooded killer. What makes them do what they do? In no way is murder acceptable but there’s always a reason for it and the typical person fails to see what’s through the fog standing between him or herself and the killer. Humans are all born the same, and are shaped to be what they become. There’s always a past that is forgotten but in many cases it isn’t. Serial killers are in the wrong for taking lives from innocent people. Their actions are certainly not justified but they are misunderstood as people do not know what triggers their killing spree.
