Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination is the Costume Institute's spring 2018 exhibition featuring the direct and indirect relationship between fashion and medieval art. The exhibition highlights the influence the Catholic Church has had on fashion. The garments range in date from the mid-18th to the early 21st centuries. The earliest piece is a mantle worn by Benedict XIV, and the latest piece is a pair of red shoes worn by Saint John Paul II. Several of these pieces have never been seen outside the Vatican. Sacred items are being kept in a separate gallery from the fashion items in order to stress how deeply respectful the exhibition is towards the world’s largest Christian denomination. Museums around the world are taking fashion from the catwalks into galleries. Although fashion cannot be displayed in a frame it can tell a story behind a certain period of time just like art does. Nowadays fashion is considered wearable art and a way of expression for many people around the world. Emphasis, embellishments and shape are key elements that every fashion designer takes into account when producing a new piece of art work. The metallic three-quarter-length-sleeve dress featured gold embroidery throughout with red heart accents and dramatic puffball sleeves. Along with the dress she wore a head piece with a nativity scene to scale to honor the theme of the museum’s exhibition, and added powder blue eyeshadow for a subtle pop of color. Many experts considered the way that Sarah Jessica Parker was accessorized as brilliant. In terms of emphasis, the nativity scene head piece took most of the attention from the whole outfit. The statement piece portrayed the holy family (Child Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph) inside a gold and luxurious house adorned with shiny beads and gold lace. The dress was embellished with gold appliques inspired by patterns used in the Catholic Church and ruby-red hearts to represent the “Sacred Heart of Jesus”. The trumpet shaped garment had wide sleeves and a long train to represent a feminine but not sexy look to remain respectful to the catholic religion.
