Implementing a Healthy Lifestyle Change

Critically Examine Current Lifestyle

Upon completing the Healthy Lifestyle Questionnaire, I have found my current lifestyle is overall generally positive. Through carefully analysis prompted by the questions and interpretation of the scores, I have identified categories I do well in, a select few categories that would benefit from change and one category that requires definite change.

Physical Activity
I partake in light physical exercise most days of the week. I aim to walk for at least 30 minutes at a brisk pace every day, up the hill and down to the end of the dirt road and back again; though I’m not strict about walking and don’t always go for one every day. Aside from that I have sound mental health and engage in mentally stimulating activities on a regular basis. I have regular social contact with friends and family. I prioritise social activities and I am part of two clubs at university that attend semi-regularly. Sometimes my social anxiety gets in the way but for the most part I have sound social health.

Practicing Safe Sex
I only engage in safe sex, am well informed about safe sex practices and how STD are contacted and the safety precautions that need to be taken.

Avoiding Destructive Habits
I don’t smoke neither do I take illicit drugs nor abuse prescription drugs and I only partake in occasional social drinking. I also limit my use of medication and make sure I only take it when needed and then only as directed.

Engaging in regular physical activity is one of the most important positive lifestyle changes one can make in regards to one’s health. Regular physical activity leads to improved overall physical fitness, health and wellness as well as a lowered risk of disease and illness (Corbin et al. 2013). After completing an assessment of my current health, it is clear that I do not engage often enough in regular physical activity.
Over these past few years my level of regular physical activity has declined, this has led to a reduction in my physical fitness in addition to lowered overall of health and wellness. Sedentary behaviour leads to an increased risk of developing a chronic lifestyle disease and mental health problems (Sandhu, Haroon and Bikramjeet 2013).
