I got a unique combination of three skills: an academic training in genomics and informatics, good analytical skills and a practical understanding of real world health care data. My interest developed in the field of health informatics during my job as a pharmacy technician. Witnessing the digitalization of some NHS services such as electronic prescriptions service, the summary care records, electronic discharge summaries, and the electronic health records, my interest grew more. This led me to study further and I ended up doing a master’s degree in health informatics.

I am responsible for the analysis, interpretation, and communication of data in the appropriate format for submission to the commissioners. We receive data from the different clinics in the community. I prepare and run reports and assist the different service managers in their information needs. I use SQL to query the databases and extract the data. To clean and blend different data, I use Alteryx and for data visualization and making dashboards, I use Qliksense. I am also learning R programming and doing a course in descriptive healthcare analytics using R and keen to learn Python. I am enjoying my current role but I feel I have more to offer as an independent researcher.

The M.Sc. degree gave me a grounding in the necessary theory and made me aware of the applications and challenges of informatics in the healthcare systems. The course also gave me the opportunity to study and carry out independent research. This gave me more confidence and inspired me to take up the challenge of doing a Ph.D.

In my master’s thesis, I performed a cost-effectiveness analysis of computerized vs manual screening for diabetic retinopathy using Markov
