The concept of health introduces multiple complexities further deepening the meaning of what it is to be healthy. The definition of health is arbitrary and can differ from individual to individual. Otherwise, my basic perception of health is experienced through the things I learned at school and from the people around me. Growing up, I was taught practices such as coughing into my sleeve and washing my hands to prevent the spread of germs. What I always understood about health is just to simply avoid sickness. However, my perspective gradually changed as I experience events involving my well-being and those around me. My best option is to turn to the Internet for help. With all of those dangerous diseases out there, I could have easily mistaken something as small as a common cold into something threatening such as meningitis. Performing searches on my health usually generate a feeling of paranoia. However, having this paranoia motivates me into caring for myself more causing me to feel even better after sickness. Normal health is always overlooked and when sickness overcomes me, I am given the incentive to care for my body in different ways. A few years ago, my father was diagnosed with cancer. The sudden change in my lifestyle caused my mental and physical health to change. I began to experience a small decline in health from sore throats to colds. Additionally, I began to feel more anxious than usual and interacted less with the people around me. I believe that the decline of my father’s health caused me to experience a sense of secondhand stress as I saw him in pain daily.
