After reading this article I concluded the purpose of this article was to tell readers of how he triumphed learning French even though his teacher was malicious. While reading this article, the author describes how the teacher ridiculed and belittled the students when they spoke. Not wanting to be a victim he studied extra hard to learn faster. Through dedication and perseverance, he could understand the French language. Proving success can still be achieved when faced with obstacles.

Sedaris gives an example of the torment he witnessed, “the teacher poked a shy Korean woman in the eyelid with a freshly sharpened pencil.” He explained, “learning French was a lot like joining a gang in that it involves a long and intensive period of hazing.” With the teacher belittling the students hope was fading of learning French. “Over time, it became impossible to believe that any of us would ever improve.” …show more content…

As a student, I can relate to the author. Although my struggles may differ I also have goals I want to reach. He tells of being belittled and tormented by his teacher. He feels as if he will never know French. By trying harder and not giving up, he can understand French by the end of the article. Success itself in any manner is outstanding, but the knowledge of conquering your struggles makes the victory that much sweeter.

I feel my evidence would be most beneficial as the body of my essay. Since I prefer to use direct quotes from the book I can use three separate key points to form three different paragraphs to support my claim. While reviewing the article, I was also able to find more quotes to assist in my assertion. I also must keep in mind not to use too many quotes. Sometimes too much information can cause the audience to misinterpret the purpose of an essay.

The most beneficial revision to me has been the Writing Center. Taking their advice on how to revise my essay has been an amazing help. Although I reread the work before sending it in for review, I always seem to overlook things. I will continue to utilize the Writing Center since it has proven to be the most useful. My grades seem to be higher when I allow myself the time to ask for their help and can correct the
