INTRODUCTION Japanese festivals are traditional festive occasions. Some festivals have their roots in Chinese festivals centuries ago, but have undergone great changes because they mixed with local customs. The main festivals that will be held annually are Sapporo Snow Festival, Cherry Blossom Festival and Nebuta Festival. Malaysia is a country where one can experience a multitude of cultural celebrations as people here made up of three main races which are Malay, Chinese and Indian. For example, Malays celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese celebrate Chinese New Year and Indians celebrate Hari Deepavali.

During Ramadan, Muslims observe daily fasts from dawn to dusk and refrain from consuming food and doing wrong things. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is considered as one of the most prominent Muslim festival celebrated in Malaysia as the majority of the population residing in Malaysia follows Islam. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is celebrated during the 9th month of the lunar calendar for a period of one month. It is also a time for Muslims to forgive and forget past quarrels. The day is also celebrated with prayers and open houses which allow Muslims to share food with their family members and the rest of the community. During this period, traditional Malay food is served to visitors such as rendang, ketupat and lemang. It is a five days festival usually held between October 13 and November 14. The festival is significant to all Hindus as it symbolises the triumph of good over evil as well as victory and hope over darkness and other challenges. Thus, Hindu homes and temples are adorned and beautifully-lit with colourful lights and oil lamps to ward off darkness and evil. In addition, open houses will be held and elaborate kolams or rangolis will be drawn outside their homes too. Extensive dishes with the aroma which lingering across the streets that truly symbolises the festivities of Deepavali will be prepared by many households and they will visit relatives. On Deepavali, Hindus wake up at dawn and start off by taking fragrant oil bath and wearing new clothes before proceeding to recite their prayers.
