Hansel and Gretel
Deep, deep, into a far away forest lived a poor man with his wife and two children. His daughter’s name was Gretel and his son’s name was Hansel. Hansel and Gretel had a wicked stepmother that did not like the children and wanted to get rid of them. The stepmother was very selfish and did not care about the well being of the children at all. The family was running short on food and the man worried about what the family would eat to survive. The father was a craftsman and did not make much money. The wicked stepmother suggested that the man take the children to the forest at daybreak and leave them in the forest never to return home again. I can’t imagine the thought of my young children being left in the forest with all the wild animals lurking around. They will surely be eaten alive by the tigers and lions, the man said. The man very sad, but desperate finally agreed.
As the sun began to rise the next morning the stepmother and father took the children deep into the woods to cut wood. The stepmother gave each child a large piece of bread and said firmly, do not eat this bread until dinner. It is all you will get and you will starve if you eat it to soon. Hours went by as they all walked deeper into the woods. All along, Hansel had been pinching small pieces of bread off leaving a trail just in case they got lost and could not find their way back home. Finally, night started approaching and it began to get dark and cold so the father built a nice toasty fire. Sit down children and rest said the stepmother. We have been walking the entire day and you both must be tired said the mean stepmother. Hansel and Gretel were so exhausted from the long day that they were delighted to be able to take a rest. Eventually, they both drifted off to sleep.
The next morning when they awoke they found that their father and stepmother had abandoned them. Gretel immediately began to cry and was extremely scared. What will we do now Hansel, said Gretel?
It was a village on a hill, all joyous and fun where there was a meadow full of blossomed flowers. The folks there walked with humble smiles and greeted everyone they passed. The smell of baked bread and ginger took over the market. At the playing grounds the children ran around, flipped and did tricks. Mama would sing and Alice would hum. Papa went to work but was always home just in time to grab John for dinner. But Alice’s friend by the port soon fell ill, almost like weeds of a garden that takes over, all around her went unwell. Grave yards soon became over populated and overwhelmed with corpse.
Misery, trauma, and isolation all have connections to the war time settings in “The Thing in the Forest.” In the short story, A.S. Byatt depicts elements captured from both fairy tale and horror genres in war times. During World War II, the two young girls Penny and Primrose endure the 1940s Blitz together but in different psychological ways. In their childhood, they learn how to use gas masks and carry their belongings in oversized suitcases. Both Penny and Primrose suffer psychologically effects by being isolated from their families’ before and after the war. Byatt depicts haunting effects in her short story by placing graphic details on the girls’ childhood experiences. Maria Margaronis, an author of a critical essay entitled “Where the Wild Things Are,” states that “Byatt’s tales of the supernatural depend on an almost hallucinatory precision for their haunting effects.” The hallucinatory details Byatt displays in her story have an almost unbelievable psychological reality for the girls. Penny and Primrose endure the psychological consequences and horrifying times during the Blitz along with the magical ideas they encounter as children. As adults they must return to the forest of their childhood and as individuals and take separate paths to confront the Thing, acknowledge its significance in their childhoods, and release themselves from the grip of the psychological trauma of war.

Throughout the poem, there is a sense the reader is looking at Gretel through the eyes of a psychologist, listening to her devolving her deepest secrets about how the darkness has rendered her almost helpless or defenceless. Gretel is yearning for answers to the question “Why do I not forget” as she is haunted by the death of the witch. She confronts Hansel, “No one remembers”. Even you, my brother, / as though it never happened / But I killed for you.”
The rain cried as if the heavens had torn apart and came down to Earth to show its sorrow, beating a gentle yet violent tattoo on the roof. The cool breeze blew fiercely through the shelter sending a shiver down Liesel’s spine, awakening her from her slumber. She peered through the rotten sheet of linen that barely covered her shrivelled, thin body as the sound of little feet and nibbling rustled through her ears. Not of the children, but of mice, eating their way through her pillow; an empty potato bag. She heaved herself up, and staggered off the cement floor, wondering if it was wet or stone cold. Her head spun as she stood for a minute leaning against the mouldy walls to get her orientation back.

Once they were back home, they sat at the dining table and started to eat the food. After 30 minutes her Aunt called and asked her to bring over some food. When she walked over to her Aunt’s place the air was colder, but still fresh and crispy. Once she was inside her Aunt’s place she sat down at the kitchen table and said hello to her cousins and Aunt. After grabbing a glass of water from her Aunt’s refrigerator her Aunt asked her to take care of her cousins while they went out to pick up food. She gladly said yes, even though she didn’t want to, but she knew she couldn’t complain and say no. After 10 minutes her Aunt and Uncle left to pick up the food from Boston Market and she was left alone with her cousins. When her Aunt and Uncle came back they started to cook and the house was filled with the smell of turkey, ham, pumpkin and apple pie and mash potatoes with gravy. At 4:00 pm her family came over to her Aunt's place and said hello and sat down at the dining table and waited for the food to be finished cooking. Once the food was ready they all sat down and said thank you to her Aunt and Uncle for cooking the food and talked with each other while they all ate the creamy warm mash potatoes with gravy and the warm and juicy ham and turkey. After everyone finished the food they all enjoyed the sweet and creamy pumpkin and apple pie. After finishing the dinner, everyone said goodbye
Grendel's mother, unknown to the Danes or Geats, is plotting to avenge the death of her son. After the celebrations are over in Heorot and everybody is asleep, Grendel's mother appears out of her dwelling place, the swamp.
So, you thought you knew Goldilocks, huh? Well, did you know Hansel from “Hansel and Gretel” is Goldilocks brother? That’s right. Goldilocks is really Gretel. Here’s what happened; After Hansel and Gretel killed the witch who had kidnapped them for months and forced them to eat food nonstop, they decided to run away, but they didn’t want anyone to connect them to the murder they had to commit here. They decided to eat the witch’s candy house to the ground no evidence was left. In a week’s time they had eaten every part of the house and decided to go their separate ways to console their grief and sorrow on their own.
2.What do Liesel and Hans discuss at the train station? Hans ask Liesel to take care of the accordion
The movie starts off with the two being called in to investigate, and bring back, missing children in the area. Gretel finds out, when taking out a witch with Hansel, that there is a blood moon approaching, and the children are needed for something. It is later in the movie, during an attack by two witches, that they need twelve children. Each child needs to be born from a different month in the year, the last of which they get in the attack. The final piece needed is the heart of a great white witch, which Gretel is. This is unknown to her until later in the movie when she is captured, after a fight with the grand witch at their old home in the woods. During the blood moon, with the help of some allies, Hansel kills a bunch of witches, and Gretel is freed. In the end they kill a great witch, in a battle at the witch’s house that captured them as children, and continue their adventures killing witches.
Imagine a young girl; the harsh African sun is kissing her bronzed skin. The warm golden sand tickles her petite and tattered feet. The immense gold earrings she wears beats against her slender neck. Her stature is of a queen, yet she walks to an uncertain death. She stands in front of a small hut, or a tent. She glances back and sees the majestic sun that had once kissed her neck now set and somewhat leave her abandoned. She exists alone in front of that diminutive hut or tent and out comes a man. He is exhausted and is ready to go home to his companion and his supper. He looks a bit annoyed that she has come so late. His hands are stained with a ruby tint and his clothes the same. He motions the young girl in. Hesitantly, she makes small and meager steps to the entranceway. She steps into a minute room with little or no lighting. She stares upon two women and a rusty table that holds the screams of the girls that went before her. The man motions her to sit in the table. She slowly places her body on the stained and rusty table. She is a bit afraid that the table will not hold under her weight; nevertheless, she is held up. The man places his cold and clammy hands on her collarbone and pushes her back to the table. As she lies there she looks to her left and sees his instruments; a bloody and rusty razor blade.
In the first opening scene, Snow White is referred to as a “lovely little princess.” In her first appearance, she is cleaning and looks as though she is in despair waiting to be saved. Snow White is portrayed as young, virginal, pretty, obedient and incapable of helping herself. This movie having been released in 1937, conveys what the “proper” gender roles of the time were. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, power is segregated between genders and even to this day, the stereotypical gender roles seen in this movie still hold some weight in our society.
Set in Poland during the German occupation, “The True Story of Hansel and Gretel” is told as a fairy tale, utilizing many of the elements that are common to fairy tales.
The dark, black sky was covered with a million bright shining stars. The moon shimmered above a small town in the suburbs of London. The gentle wind swept past the bare trees and danced with the leaves below it, creating a colourful array of orange, yellow, red and brown. Across the street, a light was on in a small house where a tall, dark haired woman stood, talking to her two children Nicola and Erin. While she was tucking them in Erin asked, “Mummy, will you tell us a story please?” “I’m sorry but its time to go to sleep now,” she said. “Please mummy,” begged Nicola “Okay but only one story,” she replied “This story is about how I got lost when I was a young girl and how I met an incredible man.
