The revenge tragedy Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, focuses on Hamlet’s internal struggles. Revenge tragedies are drama’s in which the dominant motive is revenge for a real or imagined injury. The Prince Of Denmark, Hamlet, is faced with the circumstances of his mother marrying his uncle only months after the death of his father. Hamlet even begins questioning his uncle Claudius’s part in his fathers death. These circumstances drive Hamlet to deliberate on whether or not to kill his uncle, since his fathers ghost visited Hamlet and claimed Claudius to be the killer. Unlike most protagonist in a revenge tragedy Hamlet is a man of intellect and does not take action as quickly as one would expect. Unlike most revenge tragedies,there is more than one character seeking revenge in Hamlet. Laertes, like Hamlet is faces the death of his father, Polonius. Rather than Laertes being slow to take action in handling his fathers death, he is ready to accuse the first person that appears guilty. This makes Laertes more similar to a typical revenge tragedy character. These clear differences appear to the reader how Hamlet is not conforming to these trends. Laertes is rather one demential and is far less dynamic as a character. Part of Hamlet’s popularity could stem from his dynamic character and more relatable qualities. Laertes is intent on killing Claudius in one moment, then is quickly outsmarted by Claudius and ready to kill Hamlet instead. Intelligence against bravery seems to be the theme between these two opposing characters.
