For years, Haiti has been known as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The country has been effected by many health, environmental, political, and natural disasters all leading to its biggest issue today, poverty. Poverty has sent Haiti into a huge stand still. Children aren’t getting educated, families can’t find shelter, and it is uncertain where the families will get their next meal. Since the beginning of the 19th century, poverty has been Haiti’s biggest conflict caused primarily by natural disasters, lack of education, and the spread of disease.

Sutherland (1973) noted, “Slaves initiated the rebellion in 1791 and by 1803 they had succeeded in ending not just slavery but French control over the colony” (para. 1). Although the freedom from the French was impacting for the country and peaceful for a while, the economy started to fail. It took Haiti until 1947 to pay off all of the ransom to France and interest borrowed from French banks completely, which took a huge toll on Haitian economy. The Xinhua News Agency states, “Today, 80% of those in Haiti have no roof over their heads and about three million are unsure of where their next meal will come from” (Xinhua News Agency, 2010, para. 1). Poverty has two viewpoints, the culture and the situational theory. The culture of poverty theory focuses on the attitudes of mankind and how they may result in poverty. The situational theory demonstrates the way poverty occurs through economic or social viewpoints. Most people in Haiti believe in the situational theory because of their constant struggles in natural disasters and economics. The Haitian people continue to die from the poverty’s effects every day, like starvation and the spread of disease.
