Guns Should Be Allowed In Schools

I recently read in the New York Times about the accidental killing of a shooting instructor in Arizona, America. According to the reports, when the gun instructor was trying to show the nine-year-old girl how to use a gun known as an Uzi, the gun recoiled in the girl’s hands and fired in the instructor’s direction. This accident provoked a debate over whether it is appropriate for a child to handle such a powerful weapon and, furthermore, whether there should be an age restriction for such weapons. Even though there is an age limit for people to legally carry a weapon in Arizona, there is no restriction in regards to the age a person must be to participate in firearms practice. Many people are raising the question about whether it is safe for young children to handle a firearm. If entertainment media such as movies and video games have age restrictions, why aren’t there similar restrictions for handling a powerful weapon like a gun? There is a rating system that prevents underage children from watching certain movies. Most children often do not develop the maturity or the power of judgment to know when it is okay to use a firearm. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 32,351 people were killed by firearms in 2011, and 591 of those deaths were considered accidental. Moreover, about one in five of the accidental deaths involved teenagers. These statistics demonstrate that letting a minor own a firearm is partly responsible for firearm-related accidents. Children are inquisitive and impulsive, and are usually not mature enough to make the best decisions; furthermore, in addition to wounding themselves, children can also quite easily harm others.
