Gun violence has always been a problem in America. Whether it is promoted in video games or television, it is in the face of the average American citizen daily. The main argument has been whether or not civilians should be allowed to exercise their 2nd amendment. Additionally, there have been many cases of gun violence due to individuals suffering from mental illnesses. Furthermore, as of late, there have been a string of civilian deaths at the hands of police. These events have led to anti-police mentality, especially amongst minorities. Now, I believe that an individual should have the right to defend themselves. However, with the growing numbers of deaths due to guns, there has to be a change in how society views violence.

Reason being, most of the gun shootings that comes on television highlights on how the individual has been suffering from some mental illness. Additionally, it is summarized that everyone that is a part of gun violence has a mental illness. Sadly this isn't always the case. There are some individuals who thrive on causing pain in others. For one reason or another, they receive joy by causing pain in others and want their 15 minutes of fame. One of the biggest complexities is how to fully curb the problem. One way to curb the problem is to reduce access to firearms. Preventing this is how accessible deadly firearms are available to the public. With many gun shows displaying weapons weekly, anyone can obtain a weapon. Many people believe that by making everyone take a psych evaluation can help curb individuals with mental issues from obtaining weapons. When I think of institutions, the government and media first come to mind. I believe the media, along with the tragedies, is keeping the issue relevant. In my opinion, I believe the media is supporting the problem. I say they are supporting the problem, because of how the media is playing to individual's emotions. The two sides are we should curb gun violence by taking away weapons and we prevent gun violence by arming personnel in schools and other venues. In my opinion, to help diminish the situation, proper education is important. We would stress the fact that as a society that we promote gun violence by showing it daily. By promoting education and non-gun violence, we as a society can bring down the number of shooting instances. In regards to the subject, I believe that my thinking is rational and justified. I usually promote non-violence except in self-defense. Reason being, I believe that someone should take every mean to defend themselves if they believe their life is in danger. I can see how some people may feel differently with me being in the military. With all of my training, I was trained to kill. This would be contradictory to my personal beliefs if I was ever put into a situation where I would have to take someone's life. In America guns have been a part of the country’s society since it’s birth. Throughout history the citizens of the US have used firearms to protect the nation, protect their families, hunt for food and engage in sporting activities. The issue of Guns and gun control is complex. Weighing the rights and liberties of the individual against the welfare and safety of the public has always been a precarious balancing act. In the United States, gun control is one of these tumultuous issues that has both sides firmly entrenched in their positions. Those parties in favor of gun ownership and the freedom to use and keep arms, rely on the fact that the provision for such rights is enshrined in their constitution. In this climate of growing violence, rife with turmoil and crime, gun advocates feel more than ever that their position is justified. As citizens of the “Land of the Free” possessing a gun is a fundamental right, and may even be a necessity... Anti- gun lobbyists point to the same growing violence and gun related crimes in an effort to call on the government to take action. By enacting more laws and stricter control, these people not in favor of guns feel society would be better safer.
“Guns don’t kill people, people do.” This is a well known statement that is oftentimes considered true. However, it is not completely true. Someone who is mentally ill may be unable to make logical decisions and the perception they receive of reality may be tainted by the illness. Gun laws pertaining to those suffering mental illnesses should be more restrictive. Weapons such as guns make committing an act of violence, especially when there are multiple victims, much easier. It is difficult to assess the probability of a person to commit a violent act that harms anyone including himself/herself. Therefore, gun laws need be monitored very closely and made more consistent throughout each state in order to prevent violence that could occur in the future. To make any system effective, every state must have the same laws and regulations, as it is easy for a person to travel to a state more lenient on gun control and purchase a gun from a store that will sell firearms more openly.
School shootings, gang violence, drive by shootings, murder, and thousands of acts of violence are committed every day. Members of our society criticize their own people for this violence while they continue to sit back and do nothing about it. These acts of violence have many contributing factors. Violence in our country today is escalating because we don't control the distribution of the guns sold. There are not enough restrictions on guns sold legally. The illegal purchase of guns through the black market is out of control. There is not enough education on the usage and storage of guns.

Mental health is huge problem in the United States, especially when it allows certain individuals to have access to firearms. Politicians should aim to work more on keeping guns out of the hands of those who seek to harm others, not the law abiding citizens. But this is no easy task. In the CNN article, The real gun problem is mental health, not the NRA, the author, Mel Robbins, points how the mental health problem is to blame , not the gun. In recent years a great deal of attention has been centered on youth violence. Numerous studies have been conducted on children of all races who are subjected to gun violence. However, violent behaviors start from within the environment where children have been exposed too. Household, poor communities and school as well have put children at risk. In 1968 Congress passed the Gun Control Act. This act regulates interstate commerce in firearms, making it so that you must be a licensed manufacturer, dealer, or importer. The Gun Control Act was the first attempt at restricting easy access to a firearm. In 1976 the District of Columbia City Council prohibited it’s residents from owning a handgun. Dick Anthony Heller sued the district in 2007 for denying him the right to keep his handgun in his home on Capitol Hill. In June 2008, the Supreme Court ruled the District of Columbia’s handgun ban was unconstitutional. The people of this country believe in their reserved rights, Mr. Heller’s fought for his second amendment right and won, showing the spirit of democracy.
