I would participate in the Inside Out Project by having pictures of the victims of gun violence such as the Pulse Nightclub shooting, the Las Vegas shooting, and the victims of school shootings. I would also like to take pictures of immigrants in any age to raise awareness on how important it is that they remain in the country instead of being forcefully taken away. I would use the pictures as posters to hold during protests related to gun violence and immigration. This will change the community because not a lot of people have been willing to view different perspectives from theirs about these issues. Protests and the willingness to make a change has not been as visible here compared to big cities nationwide. These pictures will help the community
“Cassie Culpepper, 11, was in the back of a pickup truck with her brother and two other family members. Her brother was playing with the pistol his father lent him to scare coyotes with. Believing he had removed all the bullets, he pointed the pistol at his sister and squeezed the trigger. It fired and killed her on impact. (NY Times)” This is a true story that happened in the US because they allow personal firearms to everyday citizens. This could happen in Canada if we allow registration of personal guns to be abolished. Canada has a reputation as a safe and peaceful country. To keep this reputation and to keep Canadian citizens safe, Canada needs to maintain its strict gun control. Canada can stay a safer country without personal firearms because it causes homicides, suicides and accidental murders.
For my Cultural Plunge, I participated with Project Excell (Extending College Education for Lifelong Learning). This is a group that meets on campus, in the union, every Saturday morning from 9:00-11:00 AM. Each participant has a developmental disability and they come from various places around Manhattan. Project Excell offers around 4 different classes for the participants to choose from, which range from dancing/theatre to the history of Nigeria. After completing a “session,” the participants go through a graduation ceremony and then begin a different type of class for the next few weeks. I joined this group as a student ambassador, who assists the classroom teachers while building relationships with and tending to the needs of the participants.
I performed mainly behind the scenes tasks such as making boxes and packing food. While I did not deal with feeding the hungry directly, I still learned and observed many lessons that were reflected in class. One thing I observed that we discussed in Reconciling All Things is people ignoring and crossing divides to help those in need. The people at the food bank did not care what the person’s socioeconomic status was, they still served and helped them. A lesson that became more solidified through this project was the fact that everyone’s job at the food bank, no matter how big or small, is important to getting to overall mission completed. Whether it was someone like me making boxes or someone serving food in the kitchen, we all played a role to end hunger. Another thing that I noticed through this project was that some problems are easier, maybe not by much but still nonetheless, to solve than we make them out to be. Hunger is probably the easiest social problem that can be solved in America due to the excessive amount of food wasted every year. Today in this day and age the world is filled with hate and violence and other terrible things. People use weapons and other objects to cause terror on others for many reasons such as power and wealth. Firearms are one of the weapons someone may use to harm or rule over others because of the danger the weapon can cause. Over the years with gun violence and killings, some people want to get rid of the citizens right to purchase and own firearms. Although gun violence bad, by taking a person’s right to bear arms will not solve the problem with gun violence in todays society.
On December 14, 2012 Adam Lanza, a 20 year old with asperger’s syndrome, shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut . According to the final report by the states attorney’s office he got in the school at 9:30 AM in the morning and shot the principal and the school’s psychologist that went out to the hallway to check loud bangs they heard. He then moved on to class rooms where innocent children were learning and started shooting and by 9:40 AM, just ten minutes later, he took the lives of twenty six people, including twenty children age twelve and below and six adults, before taking his own life (State Report on Sandy Hook Elementary shooting).
Guns and violence have some long lasting effects on not only the crime rate, but the rights that people have to own guns themselves. Even though the violence is a factor in why many believe that guns should be banned, guns should be allowed and not banned because they should be allowed because of the laws and the rights of citizens allow them there rights. The ethics and laws that occur with the current and enduring debates are another meaningful point. As Supreme Court Cases rage on about how a cities ban on handguns could break amendments, this is how the topic has gained from it (Hoxie 474). As crime statistics begin to rise there are many reasons that they need to work on the juvenile justice system (Collier 478). The other topic of the age could become a factor is another point that many think needs to be changed, as a 13 year old child could commit murder, they would not be sentenced as severely as an adult (Cohen 481). The ethic and laws play a huge effect on guns and violence because of the effects it has on crime, and the citizens themselves play a huge role on the society that they live in.
Tiffany Hsu, a author for “The new york Times”, In the article “Bank of america to stop financing makers of military style guns”, Tiffany argues that gun violence is wrong and that the people who start it all should solve the problem. First Tiffany says that Bank of America will stop lending money to gun manufacturers that make military-inspired firearms for civilian use. Next she then goes on to to inform that the AR-15-style rifles that have been used in multiple mass shootings” are a huge problem and are used in mass shooting. Finally Tiffany goes on to say The bank will wind down its relationships with the companies that choose to continue making AR-15 style rifles and similar guns. Through two decades ago and in recent years gun violence has increased significantly in the various parts of the United States. There are more cases of children and young adults, engaging in violence. Gun violence leads to the death of many civilians annually. Gun violence touches every segment of our society. It increases the probability of deaths in incidents of domestic violence, raises the likelihood of fatalities by those who intend to injure others and among those who attempt to commit crimes. put children and young people at special risk, and disproportionately affect communities of color. Gun violence harmed all the society and it was a nightmare which produced a culture soaked in blood.
My subtopic was gun violence in schools “school shootings.” There have been many schools shooting and most of them had many innocent people dying because of one or two people who had committed these horrible crimes. There are many things that should be done to help innocent people from getting hurt and prevent this from happening again. One thing that should happen is to put guns away or just getting rid of them. People get guns many different ways as you may already know. Sometimes we would just want guns to vanish and everyone one to have peace in the world. Gun violence in schools occurs around the world not only in the United States. The news inform us about the many other countries that are attacked and children or students that have been killed because of terroirs groups. People aren’t safe now days in places that we should believe schools are safe. Many parents are nervous sending their children to school because of the different stories they hear about on the news and from others.
My five themes are strategic, includer, context, connectedness, and positivity. My strategic strength will help contribute to this project because it allows me to figure out what methods have worked in the past and use it for our project. Through listening to the speakers in class, I have learned that in the past it works best to provide events that the neighborhood will be able to use and to appreciate. This way more people will come and it will make them happy. Being an includer allows me to look at the people we are trying to help and to figure out ways that will make them feel accepted at our event, such as talking with them and participating in the activities with them. Having strength in context has helped me to understand how I work best in a group. I have found through experience that if I listen closely to what every group memeber says and then take time on my own to gather my thoughts I provide more meaningful ideas to the group. Connectedness allows me to understand that all people in our community need to be helped in order to keep the community going. We can not ignore some people in the community and expect it to thrive, it is a group effort to make the community a better
Violence is a major problem in the United States. For example, gun violence, sexual violence, and racial violence are major problems. This shows that the United States does not believe in following the laws. The policeman cannot enforce laws, because people will not follow rules.
Using a gun to defend yourself doesn’t always mean shooting and killing someone. The act of simply pulling out a gun can scare of an attacker. On Wednesday, Oct 7, the theme that stood out to me was generosity and gun violence. As we got into groups and discussed our service sites, it became apparent how important our actions have onto others. For example, we discussed different perspectives of how we conducted our services and how we made an impact. For that reason, this reminded me of when I conducted volunteer work at an elementary school. I helped to facilitate Halloween by helping the kids have a joyous and violent free trick or treating. In addition, this helped the kids focus on having fun and not having to worry about the gun violence that plaque’s their neighborhood. Project Citizen is a project that seventh-graders do annually. The students take one problem and find a way to solve it. The goals of Project Citizen are straightforward. There are four steps to Project Citizen. First, the students need to identify a problem in the school or community. Then, they research that problem. The students need to finish about twenty tasks, each related to a category of school safety. Next, they evaluate possible solutions to that problem. The solutions are put into a research paper, which is what this paper is. After that, they develop public policy ideas. These are put into a group presentation and later presented to a larger audience. The four keys to being successful in Project Citizen are to work hard, work as a team, research well, and stay organized.
