The topic of gun control is a hot button issue in the United States. From accidental shootings to mass murders, the debate on gun regulations will likely never end. I personally feel like we should have tighter regulations on guns and who can handle them but not take them away completely from the civilian population. After the debate, I feel that I do not share the same opinion as those on either side because I think that I am in the middle. I do not think that we should take guns away from those who feel they need it for protection; we should not ban guns overall. Yet, I think we need to keep the guns out of the hands of those who would use them in a criminal way. In my opinion, I think that there should be a compromise and a way to meet in the middle for the safety and well-being of those who live in the United States. “According to National Crime Victimization Survey, from six million non-fatal violent crime that occurred during 2007-2011, 99.2% of the time the victim did not defend with a gun” (Planty). This would mean that if the victim did decide to use the gun, it would unnecessary for the time being to use that type of force. “According to CDC: Injury Prevention and Control, between 1999 and 2013 there were 52% of all those suicides was firearm suicides” (CDC). As a point made in this last quotation, guns are not only a hazard to the public but they are also a hazard to ourselves. Guns put in the wrong hands can be prevented with tighter regulations, such as those proposed in the Obama’s address to Congress.
