Everyone is different. We are all given unique personality traits and gifts to use in our daily lives to help us in the workplace. When we all get together in a group setting, it is important to know our own strengths and weaknesses and how they come together to make the group work. It is not always as easily said as it is done. There will be those in a group that have clashing personalities and don’t seem to want to agree on anything, much less work together to complete a given task. It is important to understand each other’s personality and for each individual to understand their own personality to make the group work more cohesively. I would definitely say that I am very animated when I am communicating with my coworkers, especially in an informal setting. I tend to use my hands a lot when I am talking and I have been told that people can tell how I really feel about something just based off my facial expressions. I am not always one to vocally say how I feel about a certain thing, but whether I realize it or not, my facial expressions tend to do the talking for me. In a recent article written on the importance of face-to-face communication compared to new, technological ways of communicating, the author stated, “Despite a marked increase in the number of communication and collaboration technologies available to workers, a recent survey of knowledge workers by TrackVia reveals that most workers still regularly communicate the old fashioned way, in person and face-to-face” (PR Newswire, 2013). Face-to-face communication is important in my work and it helps me get my point across to others in the most efficient way possible. My listening skills aren’t always as strong as they could be. Being an extrovert, I tend to try and dominate conversations and not listen to what others have to say.
