Group work assignment: Introduction Having completed Belbin’s self-perceptive inventory, I have been assorted into the category of a Team worker. However traits from other roles were also apparent from the inventory. According to Belbin’s Team Roles, a team worker comes under the classification of a ‘people oriented’ role. The main focus of people in this role is to ensure a stable cohesive work place, where people work together and cooperate with others within the group. The main characteristics of people in this role are flexibility and co-operation, with the aim of maintaining a peaceful work environment. Cited in Belbin’s team roles, people that fall into this category tend to be indecisive and uncommitted during the decision making process in order to maintain stability within the group. This role is the peace keeper of the group which can be a vital component of any group but particularly more heterogeneity groups. In my own experiences of participating in team orientated tasks I feel I fit the perception of a team worker in the majority of cases. In many of the team activities and projects I am involved with I tend to be flexible and co-operate to facilitate in completing the task. A prime example of my role as a team worker is evident within the sports team, aiding with farm work and working in the local merchants. I also contribute skills and qualities from other groups such as the implementer where I turn ideas into practical solutions. However tend to be more flexible to chance than conventional implementers. Effectiveness within a group As I am part of many groups and teams I have developed numerous skills and attributes over time. Through the different groups and teams I have been associated with, the role seems to accurately portray my involvement. Within groups I find I am flexible, co-operative and strive to keep peace between members. However to say I completely represent a team worker would be inaccurate. Through tasks and group involvement, I have taken on different roles such as team leader for the local soccer team. Similarly opportunities which have arisen during work placements have given me the chance to express alternative strengths and weaknesses, which would be more relevant to different Belbin team roles. In conclusion a mostly resemble the skills and qualities of a team worker but participation in different groups has led to the development of alternative skills which can be used in group work.
