“Grief and Recovery: The Prevalence of Grief and Loss in Substance Abuse Treatment,” is an article about how the research was conducted to understand how grief influences with addiction. This study evaluates how grief of loss affects the different stages of before substance abuse treatment, mid-progress of substance abuse treatment and the termination of substance abuse treatment. “Sixty-eight participants completed the Experience of Loss in Addictions Inventory and were engaged in one of four treatment modalities: (a) adult residential, (b) substance abuse comprehensive outpatient (SACOT), (c) substance abuse intensive outpatient (SAIOP), or (d) aftercare” (Furr, Johnson, & Goodall, 2015). What a lot of people do not comprehend is that drug addiction is not just something that affects the drug addict but seems to impact their family, friends, and the economy. When you start to look at the present-day drug addiction stats and ponder how this drug epidemic affects us all, it should be clear that a stronger attitude must be taken to combat the influence that drugs have on our country. This search first starts by seeking the root of the addiction. In the article, it stated, “For grief to maybe be resolved, the ability to express and tolerate intense feelings is needed, a process which may be challenging for individuals entering recovery. Denny and Lee (1984) observed that individuals struggling with addiction had difficulty expressing feelings and dealing with their intrapersonal issues” (Furr, Johnson, & Goodall, 2015). So, this statement means that counselors must find the source of the pain of loss for each client and help to get the person in a healing state to be able to recover from their substance addiction. I do not like the idea of just two counselors doing the whole research project on this matter. I believe there should be more counselors and research done and I also think that it should be counselors that have a specialization in substance abuse and grief counseling and not just two counselors who had completed a course in grief and loss counseling. This information should be studied and researched for more than a college semester. The article also talked about the results and how the where measured and categorized and it stated, “When participants who experienced the event prior to abusing substances were compared with those who experienced the event while abusing substances, significant differences were found for the following items, and each represented a higher percentage for those abusing substances: (a) loss of job, (b) loss of material possessions, (c) decrease in status, (d) serious health problems, and (e) financial problems. Significant differences were also found for participants who experienced the event prior to abusing substances compared with those who experienced the event since entering recovery, with percentages being lower for those in recovery: (a) divorce/separation of parents, (b) physical abuse, (c) witnessed violence, (d) damage to self-esteem, (e)
