In this 1971 novel by American author John Gardner, Grendel’s identity is developed in this book through major and minor events that affect him remarkably. Grendel is a tortured character and is all alone which makes him feel angry towards anyone he encounters. The outlook he has on life and the way it makes him think changes his identity from carefree to tortured. The way people act around him is what makes his character develop. Also the way Grendel is made so differently from everyone else plays a huge role on his character. He fears mankind because they have a complex thought, that he can’t understand. He believes their thought is one of the most dangerous things, worse than when he was attacked by the bull. When he is stuck in that tree he realizes man is chaotic and destructive. Humans see him as a threat which makes him feel so alone, the king yells out “surround him” without even knowing if grendel was a threat. He feels so attached to mankind because they are the only ones who can speak his language, because his mom has forgotten all language, the animals around him he sees as dumb, and the sky doesn’t answer him when he speaks to it. The feeling of being so alone is what makes him think “ the world is a pointless accident”. He is so alone that he doesn’t want to live anymore. He wants to be carefree but his character alters into a tortured and has the feeling of being alone. His encounters with human make him feel alone and so separated from everyone. Also his mother he can’t understand or relate to which makes him want to be the only person who exists.
