Greed – does it Destroy or Benefit the Society?

love of one's neighbour , giving something back to the community or Charity or are considered the virtuous motivations. According to me, these certainly are noble motivations, but greed is one of the most powerful motivations for human action. For me greed is the noblest form of human motivations. I don't mean fraud, tricks or theft. By greed I mean individuals being mostly anxious with getting the all they can for themselves and not essentially worried about the welfare of others. Social constraints might cause one to flinch at the thought that greed might perhaps be seen as a decent motivation.

Often used in a negative connotation “Greed” is associated with some form of socially unexpectable behaviour. Individuals who are considered as “greedy” are often looked down at by the society. As Mr. Mahatma Gandhi states “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.” But , is being greedy really bad? does not greed , ultimately, motivates one to excel? The answer to this is that the nature of greed varies form one situation to the other. The bible categorises greed as one of the sins associated with a person , but in today’s world greed is one on of the most common form sentiment found In people.

The oxford dictionary describes greed as the Intense and selfish desire for something, especially food , wealth or power. I feel that greed associated with materialistic achievement is negative but geed associated with the feeling of achieving something for the betterment of the society, humanity or ones family can have several positive outcomes.

If a person even creates a false image of themselves but full fills all the commitments made by them and helps the society evolve I don’t think the person would be considered greedy. A persons personal goals does not define the individual but the way a person achieves it definitely does.

In University of California-Berkeley’s School of Business Administration’s commencement speech the stock speculator Ivan Boesky declared, “Greed is all right, by the way I think greed is healthy” could a man who seemed so successful be so very wrong? I strongly feel that greed is one of the most influential form of motivation and that a persons personal goals, wants and dreams doesnot make a person greedy. The method used my the individual to achieve his/her goal classifies people.
