Greed Essay

Too many times in history has the government thrown aside the rights of the individual in the pursuit of their own agenda. This subsequently often led to their downfall as well. This happens far too often, even in our modern world. You would think that by now, despite all of the horrible things that came about as a result of these instances, we would have learned our lesson. But we still haven’t been able to get the message. Why? Because the power of greed is far more powerful than that of humanity. This has been visible since the dawn of man. Even though humans have a natural desire to care for one another, greed still conquers all, and that’s the sad truth of the matter. Unfortunately, governments take the greedy road far too often than they should. They get caught up in the moment and forget about what it’s all really about, which is fulfilling their side of the mutualistic relationship between them and the people. The one thing that we have in common is also the most overlooked. We’re all humans. Ultimately, we all want to be happy and successful. This becomes difficult when people live in countries ruled by an non empathetic governing body. The people that are affected the most by this are always the majority. You never want to cross the majority. So many times in history, it resulted in atrocious revolts and outbreaks of violence. We need to learn from our mistakes and start instilling new values promoting humanity and teamwork and I guarantee it will lead to a more prosperous and synergistic world. The next few sections will describe specific instances in history in which the relationship between the government was more like parasitistic than mutualistic. This has happened enough. It’s time to move on from this negativit... ... middle of paper ... ...o take it one step at a time. As Charlie Chaplin said in his speech in The Great Dictator, “in the 17th chapter of Saint Luke it is written “the kingdom of God is within man”- not one man nor a group of men, but all men! In you!” You don’t even have to take it in it’s biblical context to understand what it means. The world is what you make of it, and we have the power to make it the utopia that mankind has always longed for. With citizens and government working in harmony in the future, then this utopia will be well within reach. I’ll leave you with one more quote from Mr. Chaplin, “the misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed — the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people and so long as men die, liberty will never perish.”
