In the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the three main female characters are vastly divergent although they live in the same environment. They all differ in how they are treated by men, how men treat them, and their motivations. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses women in this novel to showcase their beauty, status and personality. Each woman is described as a different character pertaining to the time period. Daisy is a true “Golden Girl” in Fitzgerald’s story. She’s a wealthy, careless, romantic debutante who is what society wants her to be. She is the perfect girl: pretty, sweet, kind, and not too smart. She is a strong woman that fights the subservient role of women in the world. Jordan does what is necessary to meet her goals. She is a bit advanced for her time, and one example of this is how she travels alone and is not married. Tom thinks “[her family] oughtn’t to let her run around the country this way” (23). Her arrogant personality shows when she says to Nick, “Let’s get out. This is too much polite for me” (49). She avoids clever men and can’t be with one person faithfully. She seems to corrupt Nick when he is around her. Nick is an honest, good man who, because of his association with Jordan and her dishonesty, ended up helping Daisy cheat on her husband with Gatsby. Nick is immediately attracted to Jordan. Her “wan, charming discontented face” first pulls him in (15). He finds himself in love with how careless she appears. When he accuses her of being a bad driver, she confidently says that others will “keep out of [her] way” (63). For a moment, he thinks he loves her. This same confidence and disregard for others turns out to be what Nick will find most repulsive about Jordan later on. After Myrtle’s death, Jordan calls Nick and complains about how he “[wasn’t] so nice to [her] last night” (163). Nick finds her nonchalance disgusting. Nick became more and more distant with Jordan until he just broke it off. Jordan’s motivation is to do what she wants. She has little care for what others think of her. She is young, beautiful, famous, wealthy and independent; She can do whatever she wants. She has little value for honesty or people's
