Essay #2- “Think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold…that would have never bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day.” Using this quote from the novel, describe a chain of events in the novel and the results. The idea of links in a chain being an analogy for life experiences paints an interesting picture. The quote from Great Expectations says,“Think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold…that would have never bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day,”(Dickens, pg; 72). This specific quote really makes one ponder. If you apply this to the book, you can see that the life of Pip was indeed a chain. Through many events that all seemed to be connected and or, lead to his expectations. Therefore, it raises the question, does the chain link one to their life or does the chain bind and imprison the person? That forever keeping them sealed to that one horrid day.
