Rape in itself is horror. What little control the victim has over the attacker during the act is made mute by the unescapable rush of emotion and blinding thoughts that single out every wrong doing. While the assault will eventually end, the emotion overload stays, and lingers on the victim like a clinging stench. These feelings trap the victim and deteriorate their quality of life as their circumstances change but their new, permanent outlooks do not. Rape never leaves you, you become its aftereffects. In the poem ‘Grating’, in ‘four poems’ by Adrienne Rich we are dealt the realities and persisting emotional cages victims are ensnared in. The victim in the poem demonstrates that post-rape, some survivors still feel attached to their assaulters even though they have committed a horrible act to them. Rich gives us the line, “willed by a woman whose leavings I can't afford.” (Rich) Although in the poem she states her mother was her assaulter, the point still stands. She wants to leave, she knows what she did was wrong but can’t leave her because of the emotional trauma of the unknown. Regardless of the horrible assault, she still has previous connections to her attacker and this complicates the relationship. In the poem ‘Shocking Rape and Murder’ by W. Henderson we see the emotions of a woman about to be raped by someone she knows. Henderson writes, “And vile proposals made, how can I do this wicked thing, young Jane then weeping said. He quickly threw her on the ground, he seized her by surprise.” (Henderson) Jane is taken aback by the situation that is about to happen. She is mixing her previous perceptions of the assaulter with his current actions, which causes makes her distraught to the point of tears. Although this happened pre-rape, the emotions still apply post-rape as a victim is in this case attached to the rapist.
