Rape in itself is horror. What little control the victim has over the attacker during the act is made mute by the unescapable rush of emotion and blinding thoughts that single out every wrong doing. While the assault will eventually end, the emotion overload stays, and lingers on the victim like a clinging stench. These feelings trap the victim and deteriorate their quality of life as their circumstances change but their new, permanent outlooks do not. Rape never leaves you, you become its aftereffects. The victim in the poem demonstrates that post-rape, some survivors still feel attached to their assaulters even though they have committed a horrible act to them. Rich gives us the line, “willed by a woman whose leavings I can't afford.” (Rich) Although in the poem she states her mother was her assaulter, the point still stands. She wants to leave, she knows what she did was wrong but can’t leave her because of the emotional trauma of the unknown. Regardless of the horrible assault, she still has previous connections to her attacker and this complicates the relationship. In the poem ‘Shocking Rape and Murder’ by W. Henderson we see the emotions of a woman about to be raped by someone she knows. Henderson writes, “And vile proposals made, how can I do this wicked thing, young Jane then weeping said. He quickly threw her on the ground, he seized her by surprise.” (Henderson) Jane is taken aback by the situation that is about to happen. She is mixing her previous perceptions of the assaulter with his current actions, which causes makes her distraught to the point of tears. Realistically, men could never last a day in a woman’s shoes. Men feel they have power and control over women. Women are only seen as objects and all they are meant to do is housework and raise children. Being a woman is hard work. It requires much courage and motivation. “I had to fight to control my trembling and shaky voice. I had to pretend it wasn’t as all that. I was asked to describe the man who raped me. Rape is a virus that infects every nation, culture and society. It is constantly referred to as “the unfinished murder”, because of the deep state of despair the rapist leaves the victim in. There is no common identifiable trend that determines who will be a rape victim. Women are not assaulted because of their attitudes or actions, they are attacked simply because they are present. With rapists, just as with their victims, there is no identifiable trend. The old myth that only “sick, dirty, old, perverted men” commit rapes is a lie that society tells itself in order to sleep better at night. The startling truth is that most rapists work under a veil of normalcy. In order for the percentage of rapes to decrease, we have to change our ideas about rape and let go of the old myths of the past. And until this happens, rape will continue to plague our world at large.
Bruce Dawe's purpose is to convey something about rape to the reader. Written from the perspective of a raped girl, his heart-rending poem shares her intense suffering and the terrible impact that rape can have on both the victim and the family. But most importantly, Dawe evocatively comments on the "glare of blindness" that is often shown towards those who have tragically been subjected to rape -and calls for more compassion and understanding from all.

The following morning is a dreadful, long one that stays with you forever. The memories in your mind keep crawling up every night when you fall asleep. You keep asking yourself, “Why did it happen to me? What did I do wrong?” Yet no answer comes to mind, all that you can think of is being violated, being misled for a simple task-rape. Why does it happen to us? What do the men see when the door is opened and a gorgeous women stands in front of their eyes. The mind collapses trying to find a solution to the problem. It's like having an exam and the only way for you to score is to cheat. So all girls are just scores guys try to push themselves upon? The mind grows blank and the human body works with sexual instinct. Date rape is one of those things that one man can't find a proper answer for. There are so many possibilities that one might think of as the cause of the problem. Which one is the right one? Is there one specific answer that is physiologically correct? No. Everyone has his or her own opinion, whether it is from experience or from common knowledge. Date rape is mainly cased by the in-proper behavior of the rapist. A man who can rape a woman has obviously been brought up in an uncomfortable, improper raised environment.
The myth that men who rape women are sexually pathological has begun to be dispelled and replaced with an understanding that rape is an act of anger, power and control rather than lust. According to the authors of “Enhancing Care and Advocacy for Sexual Assault Survivors on Canadian Campuses”, “Sexual assault has immediate and long-term health consequences for victims including suicide, HIV infection, depression, and social isolation,” (Quinlan, Clarke, and Miller). Another common side effect these victims face is post-traumatic stress disorder. Someone experiencing PTSD may have random outburst of anger, have trouble concentrating on day to day tasks, or may even have flashbacks of their attack. These consequences make it hard for victims to get back into the normal routine of everyday life (“Effects of Sexual Assault”). In a case at Amherst College a young women named Angie Epifano faced many of these consequences after she was raped by an acquaintance in one of the college’s dormitories. While immediately choosing to ignore what had happened to her Epifano soon became an emotional wreck. Before the attack Epifano had believed herself to be an extremely strong and independent individual. What do you think and feel when you hear the word rape? Do you feel uncomfortable? Maybe even angry? Your certain feelings and emotions towards this word is a result of rape culture. Rape culture, essentially, is how a society as a whole sees and reacts towards rape or instances of rape. In 2013 rape was defined by the FBI as, “Penetration… of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.” (Division’s Crime Statistics Management Unit 1). The definition was finally changed after the old definition deemed inappropriate by today’s standards, which beforehand, stated that physical force needed to be used for rape to be considered rape. This is good news for men and women who have been fighting for the definition to be changed, but unfortunately this does not mean that state laws are being changed the same way. Even though the FBI may acknowledge the older inappropriate definition, most states do not. Sexual assault is a commonly unreported crime, where only an average of 36% of sexual abuse is actually reported to the authorities (Planty 7). Some forms of rape can include physical harm, threats, and even death of the victim, and most victims do not want to tell others for fear of criticism, self-blame, or even the fear that their attackers will carry out on their threats. Exposure and Outcome Rape can ruin your life. The sexually violent act is associated with a long list of public health concerns, including disease, unwanted pregnancy, physical trauma, mental and emotional suffering, and death. While rape can be simply defined as sex without consent, the impact rape has on society is complex. Victims are often stigmatized. They feel ashamed, weak, and at fault.
For the majority of victims it is hard to express they have been raped. The victims may feel guilty because they “asked for it” or they may feel “nasty”, as if they did something wrong. They might keep asking themselves what they could have done to avoid the attack or stopped it from happening (“Common reactions to rape”). If the victims feel this way about themselves, then what makes them think that other people won 't feel the same way. This is why many do not tell people or talk about the event. When Kathleen was raped she said she got called everything under the sun like "crazy", "nuts", "losing it", "pimp", "sl*t". She said she lost a handful of people to this event. People that didn 't understand that this was not her choice and how much it changed her (Kathleen Mary Fitzpatrick). Many people also do not feel comfortable having sex after the assault. Even being touched could be too much. It could bring them back to the event of being raped.For some people they could be suffering from PTSD, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Factors relating to the sexual assault, such as degree of violence and the relationship between the victim and the assailant also affect trauma.”(Chandler et al pp 249) Overall, is is safe to say that there are many psychological effects of rape that allows women to fear the attack of a rape.
