Deciding on a future career is a difficult task. The first thing to figure out is the desired field of the career; for example, a career in art. After deciding the field, one would need to briefly research careers in that field and narrow it down to two or three careers that sound the most interesting. Two intriguing careers in the field of art are graphic design and fashion design. The next step for deciding on a future career would be to compare and contrast the two or three chosen careers. Main factors to compare and contrast are the education required for the career, the career duties, the work environment, the work schedule, the salary, and the job outlook. Graphic design and fashion design have similar education requirements. For a career in graphic design, it is usually required to have at least a bachelor's degree in the field of graphic design or in a related field. Basic art and design courses in high school are always helpful. School also helps the process of developing a portfolio. Portfolios are essential and are one of the main factors that are looked at when being hired. School is important for experience, but there are other ways to gain experience. Graphic designers often gain much of their experience through internships and hands-on work. Education for fashion design is not much different. A bachelor's degree in the field of fashion design or a related field is required. Developing a portfolio is also important for a career in fashion design. Any basic art or design courses in high school are recommended. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits postsecondary colleges, universities, and independent institutions with programs in art and design, helpful for both graphic design and fashion design.
