Introduction
This research project seeks to discover where the negative association of rap and graffiti and how that association has affected the meaning of the art as well as why these negative judgments and thoughts are misplaced. Graffiti is a multi-cultural art form that is slowly making its way back into the foreground. It found its way to background like all the other aspects of hip hop due to the popularity of rap that virtually became hip hop. These two sub-genres have been linked to/associated with gangs,crime, and violence. With these associations graffiti became known as deviant act and rap became known as an instigating factor for gangs and crime. Hip hop consist of things such as graffiti art, rap and its variations, and breakdancing. These each have their own significance, impact, and importance to hip hop. Hip hop continued to develop and evolve over the years with it diversifying and gaining different interpretations. Heads and pioneers of hip hop tried to catalogue these “various styles.” Rap music is hip hop's most famous and well known branch. It is also recognized as one of the more aggressive and assertive branches. This attachment came with the new school and the golden age. These variations of hip hop music lessen the value or image of rap. Rap music used to be an indication of fun and good times but then grew to be a verbal aggressive assault to society's problems and those who cause them. Old school marks the beginning of rap, when the genre became popularized and heard around the world. The SugarHill Gang hit “Rapper’s Delight” “signaled the arrival of hip-hop into mainstream popular culture. The sound at this time was heavily influenced by funk and disco, and the dominant themes were partying and having a good time.” Before the new school came along, rap or hip hop music had relatively positive connotations.When the era of new school music came to surface music became more aggressive and assertive. Graffiti also had reputation of negativity it was often associated with tagging gangs. Graffiti is an urban art form originated in New York within the subways. Which eventually moved from with the subways tunnels and to walls of the city. “This movement from trains to walls was encouraged by the efforts of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority to eradicate graffiti on their property (the M.T.A. officially declared the transit graffiti-free in 1989)”(Add In-text citation). Graffiti in subways started as just quick spray paintings and/or marker signatures otherwise know as tags. This eventually evolved into a more calligraphic style which contained color effects, shadings, etc.(Ibid). Hip hop crews began making a name for themselves through their graffiti and by 1976 “ graffiti artists like…. began painting entire murals using advanced techniques”(Add In-text citation). Graffiti was first introduced to the public as TV shows and had begun getting imitated globally. “Graffiti has long been villainized by those in authority and allegedly associated with gangs, violence, drug culture and street crime. In most jurisdictions, creating graffiti art on public property without permission is a criminal offense punishable by fines and incarceration”(Add In-text citation).
