Many of us know Google just as a search engine. Google is a service that provides structured information online but there is so much more to the company. When looking at Google we should understand how the company was created, how you get a job with the company, who are their biggest rivals are, and what it is like to work for the world-known company.
In 1998, Google was created by two young men, Larry Page and Sergei Brin from Stanford University. Page and Brin started the development of a search engine which was originally called BackRub. They started this journey in a small dorm room. When they were pleased with the program they started to look for investors. Andy Bechtolsheim, one of the creators of Sun Microsystems, provided $100,000 after they sent a demo of the program to him. They continued to look for more investors and after many joined them, they eventually raised $1 million. Later in that year they hired their first employee who became the Director of Technology, Craig Silverstein. When Google started they served around 10,000 inquiries a day and within a year that was increased to 500,000 a day. By 2010, Google had gone from 2 men with a few investors to 150 employees. How do you choose who to use? When referring to Google as the website division, they compete with Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft, LinkedIn, and some other smaller companies. Google has a revenue subdivision that contends against Yahoo, AOL, Expedia, EBAY, Gannett Company (a newspaper circulator), Priceline, Disney, Twitter and IAC Interactive. On the side of technology Google fights against Oracle, Intel, CA Technologies, Cisco Systems, Hewlett-Packer, IBM and a few others.
