GOODFELLAS
Goodfellas was released in 1990 and directed by Martin Scorsee. It is a crime/thriller and biography genre film. (Giannetti, chapter 2). In the beginning of this movie, the first scene is a flash back that takes place in the soon to be revealed middle of the film. Henry Hill, the main character, narrates most of the movie. The story is about Henry Hill's life story with his journey into becoming a gangster. Henry belonged to a low income family and he started working at a young age. His first job was working at a pizza shop that was owned by gangsters. Through this job, his dream to be a gangster was created.
NARRATIVE: Goodfellas movie is an example of classical paradigm. This is because this movie has a clear beginning, middle

In this movie Ballhaus uses darkness. For example, In the bar scene where henry, jimmy and other security guy discussed to steal the money. Ballhaus want to create atmosphere evil and full of secrecy. Which is successfully represented through those scenes. (Giannettig.pg68) In this movie cinematographer Michael Ballhaus used a lot of sequence shots. In first scene, where Henry take Karen to a nightclub and as they leave their car and Henry tipping a valet outside the club and they start walking toward back door of the night club; down the stairs, as they passing through narrow space Henry commented on the couple who were chatting at a corner then walking through kitchen and camera was behind them all the time. As they pass inside the nightclub where a table is just set for them in front. The purpose of this using long shots is to create realism sense for the audience. Moreover, there were other shots like extreme long shot, In this shot henry was teenager running away from the explosion. This shot help audience to know about risk involved in the lifestyle of gangster. There were also different angles used in this movie for instance high angle. In this scene, henry was laying down and his wife Karen pointing a gun at him. This angle show the powerless henry lying and audience see that his wife Karen has
The job of a criminal lawyer is quite difficult. Whether on the defense or the prosecution, you must work diligently and swiftly in order to persuade the jury. Some lawyers play dirty and try to get their client off of the hook even though they are guilty without a doubt. Even though the evidence is all there, the prosecution sometimes just can’t get the one last piece of the puzzle to make the case stick and lock the criminal up. Such is the case Orenthal James Simpson.
Beginning the mid 1920s, Hollywood’s ostensibly all-powerful film studios controlled the American film industry, creating a period of film history now recognized as “Classical Hollywood”. Distinguished by a practical, workmanlike, “invisible” method of filmmaking- whose purpose was to demand as little attention to the camera as possible, Classical Hollywood cinema supported undeviating storylines (with the occasional flashback being an exception), an observance of a the three act structure, frontality, and visibly identified goals for the “hero” to work toward and well-defined conflict/story resolution, most commonly illustrated with the employment of the “happy ending”. Studios understood precisely what an audience desired, and accommodated their wants and needs, resulting in films that were generally all the same, starring similar (sometimes the same) actors, crafted in a similar manner. It became the principal style throughout the western world against which all other styles were judged. While there have been some deviations and experiments with the format in the past 50 plus ye...
O.J. Simpson, a great football hero, made the mistake of his lifetime that becomes the most notorious criminal case ever. Growing up on the West Coast wasn’t serene for Simpson because he was surrounded by gangs. In his high school and college years he quickly rose to be a great football player. During his time he played football in college, he was awarded the Heisman Trophy. After he became an elite athlete in college, he was drafted by the Buffalo Bills. He stayed with them for eight years, then transferred to the San Francisco 49ers (Knapp 1). Simpson met Nicole Brown at Daisy, an upscale Beverly Hills club. The two fell head over heels for each other and got married on February 2, 1985. During their marriage, Simpson inflicted many
“As far back as I could remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.”- (Goodfellas) This quote is the beginning of the unbelievable but true story of Henry Hill, told through the mob classic Goodfellas. Henry Hill was born to a poor family in New York, where he had always looked up to the local gangsters, capo Paul Cicero and Jimmy Conway. As he grew into his teenage years he looked to work for their business and was hired. He started off doing simple things like running errands, as well as collecting and dropping off money. Shortly after, he was advancing into things like the illegal sale of cigarettes with Tommy DeVito. During the sale of some cigarettes he was he was arrested, while Tommy was able to flee the scene successfully. This was
In CrimJ 100 we were talking a lot about how to court system works and the different severities of sentences. I was asked to watch the movie A Few Good Men, I was able to watch it on Popcorn time. The purpose of watching this movie was so I could relate what I was learning in class to this movie. The movie is about two marines; LCcl Harold and PFC Downie were ordered a code red on a fellow marine that was requesting to leave his company. The Commanding Officer Nathan Jessep ordered the code red to “train” the marine to get use to the conditions in Cuba. The code red back fired on the commander when Santiago died from the code red. The commander tried to stay under the radar and erase his name from getting tracked back to him. The protagonist Lt. Daniel Kaffee has to prove the Lt. Kendrick called the code red on Santiago. Another main character in this film is Lt. Cdr. Galloway, she is PFC Downie’s attorney for this case. There are many themes that we have covered in class that occur in the movie. This is great representation of how a real court case would play out. The movie showcase key themes, such as Plea bargains, Responsibilities of the Criminal Defence Attorneys, Responsibilities of the Procsector, Bringing in a witness, and also showcases judges in a courtroom scenario.
The film Mad Max Fury Road is a visually stunning film set in a post apocalyptic world. It follows the stories of protagonists Max and Furiosa as they take a group of runaway wives to “the green place”. It is a very action driven film that relies heavily on visuals. One such aspect is that of costumes. The costumes are affected greatly by the harsh environment the world of Mad Max takes place in. Resources are not bountiful and the weather and climate are vastly different from the present time. In addition, societal values have changed in this world. Positions of power are determined by the access to resources and are reflected through costume. The costumes in Mad Max Fury Road expresses the positions, traits, and lifestyles that the characters possess.
The first element is Camera distance; it is used in every scene and in every shot. It refers to how far away the camera is to the characters in the scene. Camera distance was developed in order to provide more to the mise-en-scene of a certain scene. “Mise-en-scene encompasses of variety of categories related to the staging of an action”(Belton 47). Camera distance is one of these important factors in making the scene and giving a sense of what you are supposed to be experiencing during the film. Without using camera distance to its fullest the scene or shot may not come across to the viewer as what the director or writer intended. An example of camera distance being used to its potential is in the opening sequence at ricks café. The first shot that we see at ricks is of ricks sign on the ca...
Let’s get something out of the way right now: the filmmakers created Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 to make money. It is abundantly clear while watching this movie that the creators have no story to tell, no message to convey. They simply wanted to rake in some more dough (which they have, earning over $68 million domestically). Given that starting point, it should come as no surprise that Mall Cop 2 is not a good movie. But it is a good bad movie.
There was also usage of a long take in the film. In the particular scene, it was Henry and Karen entering the nightclub. But, the entire shot of the scene was a long take, because continued the scene until the subjects sat down. Not only was it a unique camera technique, but it was also an important scene in the movie, as it symbolizes the combination of Henry’s mafia life and love life in one area.
Napoleon Dynamite is one of the best movies portraying loneliness and nerds. It is the story of Napoleon in high school and his lonely adventures. All the main characters feel separated, misunderstood, and have nobody to relate to. Napoleon has no friends and lives in his own fantasy land. He is avoided by everybody. His brother seems to be mislead, wanting to be a cage fighter but staying home all the time hopelessly trying to find love and attention on the internet. Their grandmother is never there for them, though she lives her own life right beside them. They live next to a huge field, reinforcing their isolation. Practically every home in the film is
Classic narrative cinema is what Bordwell, Staiger and Thompson (The classic Hollywood Cinema, Columbia University press 1985) 1, calls “an excessively obvious cinema”1 in which cinematic style serves to explain and not to obscure the narrative. In this way it is made up of motivated events that lead the spectator to its inevitable conclusion. It causes the spectator to have an emotional investment in this conclusion coming to pass which in turn makes the predictable the most desirable outcome. The films are structured to create an atmosphere of verisimilitude, which is to give a perception of reality. On closer inspection it they are often far from realistic in a social sense but possibly portray a realism desired by the patriarchal and family value orientated society of the time. I feel that it is often the black and white representation of good and evil that creates such an atmosphere of predic...
“You can go much farther with a word and a gun than you can go with a kind word alone” (Shaprio). Alphonse Capone was in the business to help people. He knew these people were willing to pay him under the table for alcohol. He wanted the money more than anything, which made him a greedy man. Even during Capone’s jail time, it was rare to ever find him without a smile on his face because he was a businessman who never disappointed his clients. The three main historical events of Capone’s life that are essential to know about his past is his childhood, his progress in business, and his jail time incorporated with his death. These lead up to explain the choices he made to satisfy customers to make not only himself, but his business successful
“You can’t sit with us!” this popular quote taken from an it’s equally movie, “Mean Girls”, comes about the fact that Regina George, the most popular girl in school, wore sweatpants on the wrong day of the week and being against the rules her friends banned her from their lunch table. A little over the top punishment from one simple thing, however the movie is just living up to its name. Throughout the one hour and thirty-seven minutes, there are scenes showing backstabbing-boyfriend stealing-selfish friendships, the likes of which can make one wonder. whether this is the way all female-female friendships are like. This type of toxic relationships pictured between women in the media is a harmful message to send out to the public, it creates
The “Bad Girls Club” display groups of women who are obsess with drinking and violent behavior to handle their situations, shining the light on negative stereotypes, defining a “bad girls” and the influencing young girls in today’s society. The way these girls act on TV is the way the media portray women as vulnerable and in need of male attention. By depicting women solely as physical objects, we rarely see them as powerful. Women have often seen each other as competition in many realms of their lives and so have become adept at quickly sizing up their female competition as to what makes a women’s woman (Kramer 210).The show 's has a foundation of seven women with personal, social and psychological problems, who consider their self to be
The film employs a framing technique so that the chief action of this film is a story being told within a story, whereby an introductory narrative is introduced (for setting the stage or to lead into the other story) and a second narrative follows. The film does not seem ...
