Whether its commercially mining a rare ore from the ground or recreationally panning a black silt by hand, everyone likes to see the glimmering flour gold or even a nugget of gold. There are many ways of extracting the precious treasure from the earth. Panning by hand is a method used for prospecting and recreational gold hunting. Gold panning is a technique used to separate fine material form gold using water and a particular technique. A commercial mining operation may use a gold pan to prospect an area before bringing in larger more expensive mining equipment.
The use of a gold pan is one of the oldest and most simple forms of gold mining.( Colledge) The biggest thing to remember about the gold pan is that even though it may be relatively effective in catching gold, its main drawback is that it can only process so much material at one time. This is why the gold pan is not used as a commercial mining tool in the name of processing large amounts of material for pay. A gold pan may be used to get places that can only be reached on foot. But the material must have to be rich enough to make the time worth it if there is only a limited amount of material to be processed. California was becoming known for its entrepreneurial opportunities; soon many were coming to California, not to work in the mining filed, rather to set up business and cater to the mining communities. Soon there were saloons, hotels, and red light districts spread throughout San Francisco and outer mining communities. Women who were forced to rely on men to support them back home, came to California and were able to work and support themselves in these towns.

However, there is doubt as to what extent the company violated city regulations. Tom Richards believes that Z-CORP broke regulations repeatedly but Professor Massin believes that it is not solid evidence.
