In general knowledge, a family is a group consisting of blood relatives, living together as a unit. However, family has a much deeper meaning to me. Growing up in such a small Haitian community, I was always very close to all of my relatives, whether it was my siblings, cousins or aunts and uncles. I couldn’t imagine a world without them: they are the people who made me who I am today. Born in Costa Rica, and having been obliged get accustomed to three different countries and cultures before the age of 18, my father is very diverse. He experienced Hispanic customs in San Jose, became familiar with the Haitian nation in Port-au-Prince, and discovered the American way of life in Kansas. Living in Haiti comes with its perks, growing up surrounded by soccer being one of them. As a child, my godfather could constantly be seen kicking a ball around, always in his element when on a field, according to my father. His passion for the sport was exceptional, and so, he decided to continue expanding the sport and his love for it by starting the FC Toro soccer club. Likewise, I can see that passion in the eyes of first younger brother every day, working hard to accomplish his dream of someday becoming a professional soccer player. And so, when my godfather proposed to start an all-girls soccer team, I was zealous to be a part of it. While discussing passion, I am obliged to speak about my great grandmother. At 97 years old, the woman of my family is still hanging on strongly: her passion and steadfast faith are what is keeping her alive in my opinion. It is impossible to go through one day without my great grandmother talking to God, thanking him for her life on Earth.
