Theology is the exploration of God and the beliefs that follow. With new information and the ever changing society people are forced to further develop their belief in God. No one person will have the same answer as to what or even who God is to them. Through the various teachings of people, the definition of God has never become concrete for it is a belief and will always be prone to change.
The name of God is different from all religion and in Judaism the name is too ineffable to even speak of. Dennis Edwards ,in "Human Experience of God", along with other theologians such as Rahner prefers to use the word "mystery". (Downey, pg 19) With reforming movements and the gaining of rights for people of all gender and color, the image of God is effected. As the minority gained rights the image of a God was argued. Throughout history ,in the teachings of Christianity, it can be observed that the image of god remained as the white old man with a big white beard floating around on a cloud. In this context, we can presume and assign the name of “Father” to him due to the outward appearance that the past has provided us with. We as people have subconsciously accepted this image of God and it has been taught to the younger generations. The ages where people have been limited have passed and now more than ever we question the image of God. "Supernatural theism imagines God as a person like being."(Borg, pg 65) Edwards in Human Experience of God states that we as people look forward to our conceptual awareness and use what we know to base our image of God. It is always when we are on our knees when we will call to God. God is seen more so as a protector something a parental figure does. Rather than making God be powerful and unattainable we make him be someone who is nurturing, providing, and compassionate. People want to be able to reach within themselves for that inner piece that is within us and to be able to communicate ,although all along the piece is there within us listening. This is why prayer should not be viewed as it has been over the years. As children we are taught that prayer is to worship God, we must not sin or God will punish us, and we are in this world to provide it with good. Rather than accepting such beliefs people have altered them to be more befitting of the modern nature of religion. People now look to live in the moment and take everything
