Glory Robert Gould Shaw and Tripp Analysis Maddie Lewis Period 1 Glory is a historical fiction movie about the 54th Massachusetts regiment during the Civil War. It was an all black regiment led by almost all white commanders. Its commanders were Colonels Robert Gould Shaw and Cabot Forbes. The regiment was trained by Sergeant Major Mulcahy, who was also white. However, a black man named Sergeant Major John Rawlins was promoted to be the first black commander of the regiment. Other main characters included Private Tripp, Private Jupiter Sharts, and Corporal Thomas Searles. Two important characters in the movie were Shaw and Tripp because of their character growth and personalities. Shaw also learned that not everything needs to be done alone, for at the end of the movie he finally began to treat his friends, Cabot and Thomas, with true friendship again. Private Tripp was a stubborn and determined advocate for the 54th regiment. He was defiant and often found himself in trouble, but he also stood up for what was right and fought quite well. He left to try to find shoes for himself and others, which ended up getting him whipped, but he still fought hard. He also convinced the others to rip up their paychecks when their pay was cut because of their race. Tripp probably joined the Union army because the Union was fighting to free slaves and Tripp was a former slave, so the cause was close to his heart. Tripp contributed to the Massachusetts 54th Regiment in ways that weren’t always obvious, because of his attitude. However, he did always try to protect the troops, like when he left to find shoes for them and ended up getting whipped because the commanders thought he had deserted. He was also a strong fighter, which showed clearly when he died at Fort Wagner with
