In Begler’s Article a discussion on how educators should go about teaching culture occurs. The article starts out by giving a definition of what is meant by culture and the different aspects of culture. The Author sets up the guidelines for which she will interpret and use culture. The definitions of culture are presented very clearly so as the reader can fully understand where the author is coming from in the rest of the article.
The author spends significant time discussing the World Culture Model, which could be a very useful tool to a teacher that is developing a unit on culture or just incorporating aspects of culture into the classroom. The model that is presented can be particularly useful when comparing cultures because one of the hardest aspects of comparing different cultures is the fact that there are no common grounds to judge the different cultures. The model breaks down culture into easy to look at portions, which makes it easier for both student and teacher to study.
The end of the article is dedicated to giving a lesson plan and examples of how to use the model and implement culture into the classroom. The example given is very well displayed and gives some great ideas that teachers can use in everyday lessons or as ideas for their own lessons. ...
By using the description of personal events and being extremely open about his feelings, King is open in creating a sense of responsibility in the readers for not standing up and saying or doing something. His concrete examples aid in the pathos of the letter because they invoke feelings of liability in the readers.
For this paper I have watched the movies 12 Years a Slave and Secrets and Lies. The first film I mentioned is about slavery in the 19th century in America starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as Northup Solomon. It’s actually based on the novel of Northup Solomon, a citizen of the middle class. He has written this novel after years of slavery. He was a black man who was kidnapped and afterwards got sold as a slave. Northup has already got a wife and two children when he gets kidnapped. Before he gets into slavery, he has been working as a violinist and lives in New York with his small family. One day, two men want him to travel with them to Washington and promise him to offer him a job as a musician when they return. He accepts their request and the three men go to Washington. What Northup did not know was that these two men weren’t to offer him a job in return but were to kidnap him. At dinner in Washington, they drug him and then lock him up in a cellar where he also gets chained. A white man first tortures him and calls him Platt, a slave that ran away from Georgia. He asks him about his name and starts beating him because he replies that he’s called Northup and not Platt and that he’s a actually a free man. This white man then takes him to New Orleans by ship where they sell him to William Ford as a slave. He starts working for him but one day an over-seer called John Tibeats attacks him and Northup fights back. After this incident, his owner Ford has to sell him to Edwin Epps because if not, Tibeats will kill him. After working for several years at Epps’ plantation, one day the sheriff comes over to see Northup. History shows us that putting a man behind bars, who has the passion and desire to change the world for better will do whatever it takes to make that happen. We witness that even writing a simple letter is a good enough start. Dr. king wrote from Birmingham jail based on the rhetorical elements ethos pathos and logos which are three pillars of argument. Ethos; “My dear fellow clergymen”. Pathos which is I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. logos which stated “whatever affects one indirectly affects all indirectly”.
Law enforcement officers make an oath to serve and protect, and they are expected to uphold this oath to the best of their ability, but recently there has been an increase in the number of civilian deaths at the hands of law enforcement. Since the rise in this alarming trend, public distrust of law enforcement officials is at an all-time high. This has caused the public to demand the use of body worn cameras be made mandatory. Some people argue that imposing this new technology can cause unintended problems such as, violating privacy laws or interfering with how police interact with the public. [Introduction] Martin Luther King has impacted society in such an extraordinary way. One tactic that was used during his speeches was a tactic known as rhetoric. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, rhetoric is defined as “the study of writing or speaking as a means of communication or persuasion” (cite) One of Dr. King’s strongest arguments in his “Letter From Birmingham Jail” is on page 9 of the letter. The last thought I had go through my mind when I pulled the trigger, and I'll never forget this … was that I was too late. I was too late. And because of that, I was going to get killed. Worse, my (partner) was going to get killed” said Officer Brian Cruz (KSl.com) This beloved incident happened in our beloved Utah. This incident happened in Utah right outside of the 7/11. The officer (Brian Cruz) asked a few men to put their hands up in their because of believed weapon possession. The two men that were their put their hands up in the air but one just walked away from the officer. The officer asked the guy many times to get his hands up the guy would not. Officer reacted quickly to the guy and shot him. Luckily this whole incident was recorded on his body camera. His body camera was used when the guy family tried to sue the police force. With this hard video tape evidence the officer did not try guilty and it was proven to do it for the safety of him and others. Another incident this January happened where a car was overturned and fell into a river. This crash was unnoticed until a local fisherman 24hours later noticed the car. This local fisherman called the police to tell them about the car. When the police came the discovered a baby in it and a mother. They knew the mother was dead, but the baby was alive and crying. The police man were rushed once figuring out the baby was alive. After 5 minutes of pushing the police man were able to grab the baby and run to the ambulance. This story became a miracle to everybody around the world. People started calling the baby miracle baby. Luckily the police men were wearing body cameras to film what had happened. The film, “12 Years A Slave” tells an eye opening, very illustrative story of how slavery in the states was a cruel and sickening part of American history. The story follows a once free black man named Solomon Northup, a successful violinist with a family living in the north who gets abducted and forced into the slave trade then sold at an auction. The events that happen throughout the movie elaborate the brutality of slavery on blacks, it shows the effects of slavery on them and also the slave owners, and lastly it depicts how women both black and white were subject to authoritative treatment.
Cultures are infinitely complex. Culture, as Spradley (1979) defines it, is "the acquired knowledge that people use to interpret experiences and generate social behavior" (p. 5). Spradley's emphasizes that culture involves the use of knowledge. While some aspects of culture can be neatly arranged into categories and quantified with numbers and statistics, much of culture is encoded in schema, or ways of thinking (Levinson & Ember, 1996, p. 418). In order to accurately understand a culture, one must apply the correct schema and make inferences which parallel those made my natives. The beginnings of any type of dress code come from social structures around the world. Dress codes were very important in distinguishing the different classes of citizens in society. In the past, dress codes have changed and eventually became commonplace in our educational system. Private schools have set rules in place on what students need to wear and some girls’ schools expect their student body to wear uniforms and even went as far as inspecting socks and fingernails each morning before they started their day (Elizabeth Crook, 2004). The Long Beach Unified School District is recognized as the first public school system to implement a dress code in the United States. Many schools followed in their footsteps and the controversy over dress codes and people being ready to conform to these rules had begun.

Culture is a powerful influence plays a big role in our interactions. Culture may also impact parenting style and a developing child. Having a strong sense of their own cultural history and the traditions associated with it helps children build a positive cultural identity for themselves. This also supports children’s sense of belonging and, by extension, their mental health and wellbeing. This class is crucial in understanding and working well parents, staff, and children. An effective educator understands how students’ cultures affect their perceptions, self-esteem, values, classroom behavior, and learning. As director, I need to use that understanding to help my students and staff feel welcomed, affirmed, respected, and valued. One way that I can do this is by using multicultural literature, especially children’s literature, to honor students’ culture and foster cross-cultural understanding. If cultural differences are not understood by teachers and management, it can lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings on both sides. Culture can be present in any group, large or small. There are no special skills required to form a culture, all that is needed are the thoughts and ideas of the social group’s members. These provide a meaning to the people inside the culture and provide something to study for those outside the culture who wish to better understand it.
