The Indispensable Man From 1775 to 1796 one man would be key for the growth and legacy of America and if it was anyone else, America would not be the same. This man was George Washington, general in the continental army and the first president of the United States. To understand Washington's legacy, it is important to know who is George Washington, and what happened during his presidency. Not much is known about Washington's early life. He married Martha Dandridge Curtis, they never had any kids of their own, but Martha had a two children from a previous marriage. Both of which died at young ages. Their grandchildren came and lived with them after the death of their father John Parke Curtis, shortly after the battle of Yorktown. Washington had a 1200 acre plantation, Mount Vernon. He was even a colonel during the French and Indian war, but arguably most notably was that he was appointed commander in chief of the continental army during the revolutionary war. Shortly after the revolutionary war, Washington was elected the first president of the United States of America, which was no easy task. there were three key issues brought up during his eight years in office. First, Alexander Hamilton, secretary of the treasury, issued three reports to congress "Report on Credit," "Opinion on the Constitutionality of the Bank" and "Report on Manufacturers." The first report, "The Report on Public Credit was issued by Alexander Hamilton as a means to encourage order in the American economy for the benefit of commercial and industrial interests." (u-s-history.com) and restore the national debt accumulated during the revolutionary war.
