Genre and Narrative in Oceans 11 and The Bone Collector
The Purpose of this essay is to compare how genre and narrative are
established. In order to examine how genre and narrative are
established in two crime films, we conducted a close textual analysis
of Oceans 11 and the bone collector. The main convention in this genre
is crime films, law enforces, criminals, action sequence and fast
cars. There have been many notable crime films such as cat women (2004
Collateral (2004) Cellular (2004) and Shaft (2000). I will be moving
on to consider why the crime genre has enjoyed lasting mainstream
appeal.
Crime is a mainstream genre it is a mainstream genre because there are
sub genres that come under it such as Law and Order, Police films and
detective films. Crime has an Mainstream appeal to mainstream and
independent producers because the films are not just for people that
like only crime but for people that like only one sub genre in crime
such as heist, juvenile delinquent, gangsters and detective.
The first film I am analysing is Oceans Eleven, it was released was in
the year 2001, the genres in this film was Comedy/ Thriller/ Crime,
there were many other films released at the same time as Ocean’s
Eleven one of them was Jeepers Creepers. The director for Oceans
Eleven was Stephen Soferbergh and the studio was Warner Home Video.
The main stars in this film is George Clooney and Brad Pitt, these
stars are going with typecasting both stars have appeared as criminals
in many films George clooney starred in Out of sight (1998) also Brad
Pitt has done similar roles of being a criminal such as Snatch (2000).

Both films have high production values. This is shown by the
characters used are big main stars the studios that have produced the
two films are big, the two films studios are Warner home videos and
universal studio who are big in the movie industry. There are
expensive sets and expensive gadgets.
Oceans Eleven is the more successive in introducing genre and
narrative, we know this because at the start of the film is a
signifier by it being in a prison.
I personally enjoyed The Bone collector because it had a appeal for me
even though I am in to the mainstream appeal, but the way the film
started of made me like the bone collector but Oceans eleven took long
to start.

The influence of the navy on literature is not necessarily a traditional topic in Western canon. The issue of maritime concerns can be traced as far back as Homer's Odyssey with a military leader taking the role of the protagonist. It is not just through content that naval concerns have influenced Western literature, but through the experiences of authors in serving their nations. Soldiers and veterans have long turned to literature during and following service, for a variety of reasons. It is in the twentieth century that American sailors began to seriously influence the genres in which they wrote. Science Fiction's golden age can be attributed, in part, to Robert Heinlein, and Frank Herbert, two men who served in the Navy during World War Two. Likewise, the postmodern genre was expanded by Richard Marcinko and Thomas Pynchon, who served in the years following the war. The experiences of these authors in the United States Navy provided background with which they shaped their respective genres. Together, their works share the common theme of society over the individual.

Defining a film genre is in some ways difficult and simplistic. Every genre has stated what would define its boundaries. The difficult part is finding one that is solidified by the movies in the genre. The stated definition that this paper will digest and regurgitate is that a Western is a film which is set in the American frontier west. The typical time setting is somewhere in the mid to late 19th century and early 20th century(Dirks, 1). They glorify the past-fading values and aspirations of the mythical by-gone age of the American West(Dirks, 1). In order to understand a plot of a story, one must be able to know what is going on in the story. In the selection, The Seafarer, the author recounts the tale of his disoriented life at sea. He douse the passage with aspects of emotion, value , and connotation. Without these qualities in The Seafarer, the story would be drastically changed. The way the author incorporates this information is through the story's setting. Setting is significant to The Seafarer because it allows readers to better visualize, understand, and ultimately relate to the plot of the story.

What they must do for survival? How man love their lives and no matter what strikes upon them, holler from behind, ambush their morale, yet they want to keep going just for the sake of living. The book is epitome of such a situation that encounters survival over morality.
