The most compelling passage in OT for me would be the passage Genesis 4:2-8 where Cain and Abel submit their offerings and how god was pleased with one of their offerings not the other one. It is not very clear why god choose Abel over Cain's. From the details that are given in the bible we know Cain's job was harder than Abel's. In addition the verse just talks about god didn't have favor on Cain's offering. This is creates jealousy between them and Cain kills his brother. This is also the first place in the bible with a murder and he denies it. It is relevant to modern readers because it is going around even now. Genesis 3 highlights and records the fall in a simplistic form so it can be easily understood. On the sixth day of creation, God formed man in his own image. Man who is in the image of God has “dominion over…all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26). The question would not be about the appearance but the power of dominion of man who is made in the image of God.
The Cain and Abel story, possibly the most enigmatic story of good and evil in the Bible, is the basis for East of Eden. Although allegorical elements are scattered throughout the whole novel, the most evident theme struck me as three of the main characters discussed the ramifications of God's words to Cain after Abel's death. Lee, a Chinese servant to one of the novel's main families, explained to his two companions a little-known conflict between the translations of Genesis 4:7 in two versions of the Bible. In one translation, God tells Cain that "thou shalt" rule over sin. In another, God says to Cain, "Do thou" rule over sin. The first is a promise, and the second is an order. Lee concluded that the ambiguity presented by the two translations is at the heart of the universal human story.

Is creation a viable model of origin in today’s modern scientific era? This was the focal point in the debate between Ken Ham a leading creationist apologist, and Bill Nye, an Emmy award winning science educator. In focusing on Ken Ham and his hermeneutics, it is clear that the genre he presupposes for Genesis 1-3 is that of a historical narrative. Genesis lays the foundation for the gospel which is why he and other Biblical creationists hold such a young-earth view (Answers in Genesis). The first chapters of Genesis teach us about God’s perfect creation, man’s rebellious fall, God’s just punishment of death for sin, and God’s gracious promise of the seed, Jesus Christ (Answers in Genesis). Ham states “The creation/evolution debate is really a conflict between two philosophical worldviews based on two different accounts of origins or historical science beliefs. Creation is the only viable model of historical science confirmed by observational science in today’s modern scientific era.” He says “Creationists and Evolutionists have the same evidence on the Grand Canyon, Fossils, Animals, Humans, DNA, Radioactive Decay and the Universe.” Creationists and evolutionists differ in the sense that although they use the same evidence they develop two radically different interpretations.

The relationship between God and his creations humans can be said to be a very complex relationship. Genesis shows us many examples of God's interaction with humans and human's interaction with each other. From the creation of Adam and Eve and all the events that follow afterwards, I shall show what the relationship tells us about the nature of God and mankind.
The story of Cain and Abel illustrates a horrible limitation and a horrible potential that each of us possess. The story is not about good and bad, but more about how each human has within him the potential for good and the potential for bad.
Answering these questions is the purpose of this essay. I begin by arguing that the Bible cannot be adequately understood independent of its historical context. I concede later that historical context alone however is insufficient, for the Bible is a living-breathing document as relevant to us today as it was the day it was scribed. I conclude we need both testimonies of God at work to fully appreciate how the Bible speaks to us.
