For instance, when we go to Mexico my dad always buys at least one clothing item for everyone in the family. There's a lot of family member, so my dad spends hundreds of dollars every time we buy clothes for our family. Sometimes some of our family members don’t appreciate what we bought them, so my dad gets mad at them and tells them “if you don’t want it, then leave it someone else can appreciate what I give them”. My dad also spends a lot of money when we are in Mexico because he pays for the food and bus that he rents, so that the whole family can go to the beach. I am also generous with my siblings. For example, when my dad is not home on the weekend I go buy food for my brother and I. Sometimes, I get Starbucks for my older brother even though I don’t really want to drive there because of the traffic in downtown or when I am out with my friends he texts me if I can bring him something to eat after I am done hanging out with them. There are many examples of this in the book. The first example of this is at the truck station in chapter 15 when the restaurant owner and waitress give the family bread at a discounted rate, and candy two for a penny when it is actually nickel candy. The truck drivers then leave large tips to the waitress. Neither the truck driver nor the restaurant owner and waitress are very rich but they are generous anyway. In chapter seventeen the person at the car dump gives Tom and Al things for way discounted rates. Ma Joad is also an example of this. The Joads are poor and yet they give what little they have to the children who need it. They also stay and help the Wilsons when it just slowed them down. Another example is when the small land owner that Tom first gets work warns them of the plot of the Farmer's Association to raid the government camp. The clerk in the company store in chapter twenty-four is also generous, lending Ma ten cents so that she can get sugar for the coffee.
Most people feel that they should help the needy in some way or another. The problem is how to help them. This problem generally arises when there is a person sitting on the side of the road in battered clothes with a cardboard sign asking for some form of help, almost always in the form of money. Yet something makes the giver uneasy. What will they do with this money? Do they need this money? Will it really help them? The truth of the matter is, it won't. However, there are things that can be done to help the needy. Giving money to a reliable foundation will help the helpless, something that transferring money from a pocket to a man's tin can will never do.
Generosity is also a moral virtue. When you are generous, you are either giving too much, which makes you profligate, or you are giving too little, which would consider you a stingy person. Moral virtues lead you to happiness because of their intermediate state, that is, by reasoning.
My attention was also drawn to several questions in this podcast, which made me eager to find the answers to these questions. For example, one interesting question I heard was “when you do see generosity how do you know it’s really generous” (Levy, 2010). This question stood out to me because it is one particular question I don’t think about often and made me wonder whether people help someone out because they see it as a duty. This is still a broad term, but it is broken up into two major categories, which are politeness and compassion. Politeness is more like the tendency to respect people, conform to social norms, and ignore aggressive impulses. However, generosity tends to fit under compassion better. The Russian geographer and self-proclaimed anarchist gave up all his wealth and better lifestyle in order to advance his theory of mutual aid. The major concern was the liberation of the fellow Russians who languished in poverty.
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
For instance, it was an extremely sunny day in Ghana, West Africa, and I had gone out to the well to fetch water. It was while carrying the bucket of water on my way back that I noticed my neighbor’s children fighting over the insufficient amount of food that they had to share. My family and I were not rich but from what I saw, I knew that we were better off than other people I knew. I carried the bucket of water inside the house and came back outside to call the two youngest children that were fighting over the last grain of food. I shared my food my food with them and though it was not sufficient for all, feeding the younger ones alone was better than not helping any one of them at all. There was only little that I could possibly do but by sharing, I had helped them in a great way, even if it was just for the time being.
Thousands of homeless animals are looking for forever homes in America. Volunteering is a great way to give to your community and socialize the animals at the shelters. Working with dogs and cats that have not had good starts in their lives helps them trust again. It helps animals get over the trauma they have had before they went to the shelter. Socializing makes the animal more adoptable and they are given a chance to get forever homes. Volunteer at your local humane society 's and help out the animals like I have worked with in shelters.
For something to be both morally relevant and invariably relevant, it means that the subject, in this case generosity, cannot change in its importance. This means that if we give a value system to acts, a certain act will always have the same value points. To put this into more concrete terms, if generosity has a value of positive points, it must always have positive points if it is invariable relevant. One may voice that generosity cannot be taught for the reason that no one can educate you on how to conduct yourself in a generous way. I for one would be against that just to say an individual is not being instructed by a physical human being what it means to be generous but you are merely discovering by trial and error what true generosity is. If one person holds the door open for somebody else, basically, the receiver of the kind act is benefitting by not having to open the door. Although the example sounds very simple, the act is still helping somebody. If people did not hold the door open in the modern day society, the combined amount of times one would have to open the door would be significant. Secondly, showing kindness builds character. If somebody shows kindness, the people around would start to see the type of person the giver is. Good character is very important in life, and it will earn somebody a lot in life.
