It is believed that the high-tech world of today has alienated children from their parents, thus increasing the ‘generation gap’. Do you agree? Discuss with relevant supportive material. Generation gap is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as a difference of attitudes between people of different generations, leading to a lack of understanding. (Definition, 2011) It is the difference of views, opinions and priorities among different generations. Generation gap has always existed between different generations because they do differ somewhat in their beliefs and attitudes. Although this acts as a barrier but it also makes different generations distinct. (Article, 2011) Generation gap is also a sign of progressiveness in the society. For parents to avoid being termed as out-dated and from the Stone Age, parents have to stay-up-to date with the latest technology. And this is not all there is to it. As already mentioned, it is the lack of communication that worsens the situation. Generation gaps have existed in all generations, but things are so bad with today’s generation because the technological advancement have created distances between parents and children. The children are too engrossed in their own private hi-tech driven worlds and the parents are inept at penetrating this world. Communication between parents and children and an understanding of each other’s view is very essential in decreasing the gap. The gap would exist as no two generations can be the same but at least if a positive effort is made by both sides, they would be able to avoid alienation.
