The three pieces of music I chose to compare were General William Booth Enter Into Heaven by Charles Ives, Pavanne by Bill Evans, and Concerto Grosso 1985 by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. These three pieces all have a unique sound and I enjoyed learning about the composers as well as their inspiration for their piece.
First, I chose the selection by Charles Ives because after reading the description of the piece, I was not expecting what I heard. When I think of hymnal music, I think of this beautiful melody and the dynamics are what drive the vocals and the emotion that the listener feels. In this piece, it starts off with a dissonant sound and there seems to be a lack of structure. The creators of the piece did not want to reproduce a basic keyboard sound and they definitely succeeded. I have never heard a combination of jazz and an orchestra like this before, it is normally an orchestra playing jazz selections. The melody is beautiful and it lends its self well to the improvisations of the trio. It took me a few times listening to the whole song to hear the chord that was played under the melody but it provided a nice segue into the woodwind's playing of the theme.
Finally, the selection by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Zwilich used techniques from the Baroque period and incorporated it into the twentieth century. It is interesting how she incorporated the harpsichord that was, for the most part, no longer used in orchestras, as well as still utilizing the new technique of freer sounds that move away from the tonal center at times. It was really surprising how the melodies continued to move back and forth between the two eras so
